Spoiler alert: YOU are in control of how you age!🫵🏼

Yes aging brings about changes but many can be prevented, delayed, or well managed through YOUR actions!

The more you take charge, the better your aging journey has the potential to be 📈

Check out these 5 things to know about healthy aging- and how your everyday actions can make a BIG difference!

💚 Lifestyle plays a greater role than genetics in healthy aging
➡️Everyday habits like nutrition, exercise, and stress management play a greater role in determining life expectancy compared to genetics.
➡️While we can’t change our genetics, research has found that living a healthy lifestyle can override the presence of certain health conditions

💚 Having a positive mindset and a sense of purpose can increase your life expectancy
➡️Positivity and mind-body based practices, such as meditation, have been linked to improving both physical and mental health
➡️On a similar note, having a sense of purpose whether through working, volunteering, or pursuing hobbies, also reaps these benefits

💚 Getting older doesn’t mean you can’t (or won’t) get stronger
➡️Muscles can get stronger at any point in your life since strength training is effective for adults of all ages
➡️While there are some age related muscle changes, these can be prevented with regular strength training and proper nutrition

💚Brain health is about more than just puzzles
➡️Puzzles and brain games are part of the equation but aren’t enough to keep brains healthy and strong while aging
➡️Having a strong social support network, getting enough sleep, regular cardio exercise, and challenging your brain by learning something new have all been found to support brain health in a meaningful way

💚 A cognitive decline is not an inevitable part of aging
➡️ Research shows that people can live into their 80s with the same cognitive function as those in their 30s
➡️Lifestyle factors, like many listed above, contribute to the preservation of cognition

Want to know the truth? Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be time intensive or complicated.

In fact, it’s the little things that result in the greatest benefits.
Have 5 minutes? That’s really all you need for these 5 healthy aging hacks.

🧘‍♀️Spend a few minutes each morning or each night meditating or doing deep breathing exercises. Both are linked to physical and mental health- and asan added bonus, meditation has been shown to improve brain health, strengthening neural connections and opening new pathways.

🏃Look to add short bursts of exercise, aka exercise snacks, to get more movement into your day. Dance, walk, do some squats or anything else during that commercial break or while you’re waiting for your meal to be ready.

🍴Spend a few extra minutes packing your lunch or snacks before you head out the door. This is one of the easiest ways to ensure that you make healthy (and not impulsive) eating decisions throughout the day.

🐶Snuggling or petting your cat or dog has been found to lower blood pressure and stress levels while releasing happy hormones. Some research even suggests that pet ownership is linked to longevity so if you’ve been debating whether or not to get a furry friend, this is your sign!

☀️Getting enough sunshine- especially in the morning- helps to jump start the day and boosts your mood. It also helps you get good sleep at night which is important since quality sleep is an important part of healthy aging. When in doubt, go outside to reap all the benefits the outdoors and sunshine has to offer.

See? Short time commitment. Long health benefits.
Which one is part of your longevity routine?
