From the operating room to the lecture hall — Dr. Joaquín Hidalgo shared his expertise this week as a guest speaker at the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds.

His talk covered a practical and important topic: how and when to refer patients to neurosurgery, including what workup can be initiated in the primary care setting to help referrals move smoothly.

We value opportunities to connect with providers across Mississippi to support coordinated, patient-centered care. Thank you UMMC Department of Medicine for the invitation and collaboration. 💙

If you’ve ever spent time at Methodist Rehabilitation Center, you’ve likely met Debbie Stewart and Connie Snow — the dynamic duo who’ve kept our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation division running strong for as long as anyone can remember. Their teamwork, laughter, and kindness have left a lasting mark on everyone who’s come through those doors.

Now, they’re both stepping into retirement together — a bittersweet moment for all of us who’ve been lucky enough to work alongside them. Thank you for the dedication, joy, and heart you’ve poured into your work. We’ll miss you both dearly and wish you nothing but happiness in this next chapter! 💙

This October, we’re shining a light on Spina Bifida! 💡💙

Our multidisciplinary Spina Bifida Clinic at Children’s of Mississippi was full of energy as patients received coordinated care from experts in neurosurgery, orthopedics, complex care, urology, psychology, physical therapy, and social work—all in one visit.

Spina bifida, a birth condition that affects the spine and spinal cord, impacts each person differently—from mild cases to more complex situations requiring lifelong support. Every patient we see is a reminder of strength, determination, and the power of teamwork.

By bringing multiple specialties together, our team ensures each child receives personalized, comprehensive care that supports mobility, learning, and independence. This collaborative model helps patients not only manage challenges but also thrive.

Join us as we shine light on spina bifida and celebrate this incredible community! 💛

The need for a neurosurgeon can start before birth. At Children’s of Mississippi and UMMC, we’re proud to have the only pediatric neurosurgeons in the state, working alongside specialists to care for Mississippi’s youngest patients.

Twins Hazel and Harper were born with cutis aplasia, a rare condition where portions of skin and skull bone are missing at birth. Their surgeries required both a craniofacial plastic surgeon and a neurosurgeon to protect their developing brains while safely reconstructing their skulls.

Our pediatric neurosurgery team treats conditions like this every day, from brain tumors and hydrocephalus to spine injuries and trauma, often in collaboration with other specialists to deliver the best outcomes.

🎉 After more than 30 years of teaching, mentoring, and research at UMMC, Dr. Eddie Perkins is officially retiring from the Department of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Perkins has been a foundational part of our education and research missions — leading neuroscience courses, guiding resident research, and supporting generations of trainees. In his three decades at UMMC, he has taught thousands of students — shaping the knowledge and careers of many of the physicians caring for Mississippi today.

To honor his contributions, we’re proud to announce the naming of our Neuroanatomy Research Lab in his name ❤

Thank you, Dr. Perkins, for your extraordinary service, mentorship, and impact. You’ve left a legacy here that will last far beyond retirement.

Enjoy a look back at 20 years of department photos! Tag yourself or an old friend 📸
