Sometimes, the softer more gentle techniques are the most effective. Deep tissue or even Swedish massage techniques may not be what will give the most relief.

Be openminded and willing to try different techiques and modalities than you might be used to. It may lead to the best outcomes.

Life is busy. Especially this time of year with the holidays packed closely together. We often put things for ourselves on the backburner.

Going up stairs can be a challenge. Case in point, at tonight’s middle school and high school choir winter concert. ❄️ + 🎶 There are plenty of stairs to remind you that your sciatica has been acting up and your back and neck reminding you about your posture.

Get out and see a couple of the community events this season. You don’t even have to stay long but you might see something that doesn’t come around very often.

We don’t usually see camels in our neck of the woods but here they are. Two of them are at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home this evening.

There is a live manger scene and the middle school chiors are singing Christmas carols. I believe there is even a food truck selling hot chocolate.

I remember that in past years, the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home has also had horse-drawn carriage rides leading up to Christmas. Maybe we’ll see that in the coming weeks.

Numbness and tingling in your hands may or may not be from carpal tunnel.

I have found that Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) may be the cause of some of the symptoms that can be confused with carpal tunnel syndrome. While I may not be able to diagnose, I can assess and treat what I find.

This article from the Cleveland Clinic explains more of the specifics about TOS.

And although it does mention the possibility of surgery in extreme cases, I have successfully treated it in my office. Sometimes, a physician may prescribe medication, physical therapy, or another treatment before going to the last resort.

Think about using massage therapy as a natural, drug free treatment option before moving on.

The holiday season can be a great time of year. But it can also be a stressful one.

Manage your stress now and throughout the season by making the time to destress. Try sitting in a quiet space and clearing your head. Listen to your favorite music. Read quietly. Clear out that corner that’s been giving you the side eye for months now.

Deep tissue massage shouldn’t be painful.

If it’s just straight pain…don’t do it. If it’s a “good hurt” then that’s different.

I’ve had patients tell me, “go as deep as you can; you won’t hurt me”.

But that isn’t helpful to either the patient or the massage therapist.

It can damage tissue and it wears out the therapist. It can hurt the therpist over time as well.

My approach is more about the angle I approach the tissue. The steeper the angle the deeper the applied pressure will go. I do use more pressure but I don’t put my whole body weight into it.

Be safe when asking for deep tissue massage.
