I am proud to work for Jackson Public Schools Child Nutrition because our department plays a vital role in supporting scholars' success. I love working for JPS Child Nutrition because I was a JPS scholar for 12 years. This gives me a firsthand perspective on how the school system operates, particularly in the context of the meals provided.

Since my employment in Child Nutrition, I have seen the improvements in the quality of meals we have served over time. I enjoy seeing the department’s progress in serving healthier, more nutritious meals compared to when I was a student.

I am proud to be part of the team that is actively involved in making these positive changes. My role in contributing to healthier meals at JPS is a source of pride.

My experience as a former JPS student motivates me to work in the Child Nutrition Department, where WE take pride in the progress made in improving meal quality and helping to provide healthier options for current students.

For more many years, 31 to be exact, I have had the privilege of serving in the Jackson Public Schools Child Nutrition Department—a role that has become both my passion and my purpose. Coming from the classroom, I deeply understand the powerful connection between nutrition and learning. In Child Nutrition, we do far more than provide meals; we help create the conditions for students to thrive. We nourish their bodies so their minds can grow.
Every time I visit a school, I am inspired by our scholars. Their energy, curiosity, and potential remind me why our work matters. I take every opportunity to encourage them to make healthy choices and to believe in their ability to achieve excellence. Our scholars are this district’s greatest investment, and it is an honor to play a part in shaping their journey. I stand firmly behind the belief that School Meals Improve Learning Every day (SMILE). In simple terms: I serve to make them happy, I serve to meet their needs, it’s hard to learn if they are hungry. They are the reason why I serve.
I am also honored to be part of an exceptional catering team—one that brings creativity, professionalism, and a spirit of excellence to every event we support. Together, we help ensure that the district’s celebrations, milestones, and special moments are handled with care and pride.
Working in Child Nutrition has given me the opportunity to touch lives in a meaningful way. It has allowed me to serve not only meals, but also hope, encouragement, and consistency. I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues as we uplift our scholars and support the mission of this district. This work is more than a job—it is a calling, and one that I am grateful to fulfill each day!

I work for JPS Child Nutrition because feeding our scholars is my Superpower!!! Good food = Good learning, and I love being a part of a TEAM that make this happen every day. By creating the menus, I get to plan meals that keep our scholars full, focused, and ready for the day. I love knowing that what I do behind the scenes help fill classrooms with focused, happy and ready to learn scholars. I serve because I care, and I am committed to making a difference one meal, one scholar, and one day at a time!

The Lunch Line is where so many great beginnings start. Each day, scholars walk through one side while our Child Nutrition team works diligently on the other preparing the nutritious meals that fuel learning, growth, and success.

Today, I’d like to begin introducing some of the dedicated staff behind The Lunch Line and share why we choose to serve Jackson Public Schools.

For me, I serve with JPS Child Nutrition because I want the opportunity to help shape the future leaders of Mississippi, the United States, and the world. Nutritious meals power young minds and that’s why we do what we do.

We look forward to sharing more of our team’s reasons for serving in Child Nutrition.

Welcome to The Lunch Line. — Alvin Edney, Interim Executive Director of Child Nutrition
