About the Community Outreach Center

The Jackson Heart Study Community Outreach Center is the result of the successful operation of the Community Partnership/Outreach Office which operated under the auspices of the JHS Coordinating Center at JSU from 2000-2013. CORC, formerly the Community Partnership Outreach Office, was instrumental in the development and implementation of novel strategies to successfully recruit the 5,301 JHS cohort. Partnerships were developed with over 100 churches, community-based organizations, governmental agencies, private non-profit organizations, other institutions of higher learning and individual partners. The Jackson Heart Study Community Outreach Center has major responsibility for the retention of approximately78% of the living cohort, has trained/certified more than 90 community health advisors to provide health education services in the tri-county area of Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties since the study began in 2000 and has expanded research opportunities for community participation, specifically in hypertension and chronic disease self-management.

The Bolton/Edwards CHAN held their Recruitment & Retention Christmas Celebration on December 18, 2017, 6:00 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bolton, MS. An invitation was extended to surround communities of Edwards and Bolton. Connecting with people and recruiting new members are a goal of this holiday celebration. The CHAN’s event was an opportunity for the Bolton/Edwards CHAN to come together with family and friends and provide updates and general information; and also, to promote the Jackson Heart Study and the Jackson State University-JHS Community Outreach Center.

The celebration was well attended and spirits were merry. Mrs. Cassandra Bishop was an engaging Mistress of Ceremony throughout. The program included a poem by CHA member Ms. Alfenette Robinson, a song, “O Holy Night” by Ms. Shamar Bishop and Mr. Demarrius Stamps. A fulfilling dinner was served, and Mr. Marty Fortenberry, Jackson Heart Study Community Outreach Center was the Guest Speaker. Marty discussed cardiovascular health, the importance of a healthy diet and the benefits of physical activity. Ms. Henrietta Cavett and Ms. Elnora Mack presented door prizes to lucky winners. This was the CHAN’s best Christmas Celebration yet, and next year’s should be even better. Congratulations Bolton/Edwards CHAN for bringing communities together and hosting a delightful festivity.

The Jackson State University Jackson Heart Study Community Outreach Center better known as CORC, is a bridge builder towards healthier communities. The CORC is unique. For almost 2 decades, first as the Community Partnership/Outreach Office from 2000-2012 and now as the Community Outreach Center since 2013, the CORC has partnered and engaged with governmental agencies, neighborhood associations, community and faith based organizations, non-profit and civic groups, and educational entities including institutions of higher learning and public school districts.

Housed in the JSU School of Public Health, the Jackson Heart Study Community Outreach Center understands the power of art as a tool to engage, educate, and motivate children in adopting healthier lifestyles. Research shows that creating their favorite fruit or vegetable with art can motivate children to eat more fruits and vegetables at home (Eat Well-Live Better Nutrition Art Activities). A curriculum developed by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Nutrition Services, integrates nutrition education into arts and crafts activities for children ages 6 to 9 in after-school settings.

This video clip is a snapshot of what the Jackson Heart Study Community Outreach Center, in conjunction with Jackson State University Gallery 1, Kids College, and the Jackson Heart Study Community Health Advisors Network does to address cardiovascular health in the metro Jackson, MS area. Don’t be surprised if you see CORC in your community!
