Dorothy Lee Gilmore, affectionately known as “Dot,” the youngest of three children, was born March 4, 1948 in Clarke County, Alabama. She peacefully entered eternal rest on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age at Rockbar Baptist Church in West Bend, AL. Her walk with the Lord remained strong throughout her life, and during her time away from Rockbar, she continued her spiritual journey as a devoted member of Destiny World Church in Austell, GA under the leadership of Pastor Wilbur T. Purvis.

She received her early education at Cunningham Elementary School and Clarke County Training School in Coffeeville, AL. Committed to lifelong learning, Dorothy later pursued higher education to further her academic and professional aspirations.

Dorothy dedicated many years of faithful service to the Clarke County Board of Education, working as both a teacher’s aide and a school bus driver. Her devotion to education and the well-being of children made a lasting impact on her community.

She was known for her boundless compassion, kindness, and unwavering generosity. Dorothy never denied help to anyone in need. Her door and her heart…were always open. She was a mother and a friend to all who had the blessing of knowing her, offering wisdom, comfort, and love without hesitation.

Dorothy found great joy in simple pleasures: fishing, attending school sporting events and church functions, and uplifting the name of the Lord. She was a faithful steward of her time, talents, and resources, always placing her faith and her family at the center of her life.

Dorothy deeply cherished her siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. Her legacy of love, service, and selflessness will continue to live on through all those she touched.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Wylie Dewberry and Harriet Sellers Dewberry; maternal grandparents, George and Connie Thomas; parents, George and Willie Mae Dewberry; son, Michael Gilmore; granddaughter, Chrishundra Monique Gilmore.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her legacy and precious memories forever, her loving sons: James Tyron Gilmore of Detroit, MI and Ryland (Elena) Gilmore of Atlanta, GA; two siblings: Eugene Dewberry of Conyers, GA and Brady Earl Kiel of Coffeeville, AL; six grandchildren: Cherelle, Moesha, Jada, Jasmine, Ryleigh, and Raela; two great-grandchildren: Derrus Jr. and Emani; four nieces and nephews: Pam, Eric, Roderick (Kerry), and Lakia (Willie); great-nephew, Crane Arthur; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing Friday October 17, from 2:00 til 5:00pm at Jackson Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson, AL. The service will be held on Saturday October 18, viewing will begin at 1:00 til the 2:00pm funeral hour at Coffeeville High School Auditorium 22974 Hwy 69 Coffeeville, AL. Edward Lee Nix, affectionally known as "Man Nix," was born on Dec. 25, 1944, in the Vernal community of Leakesville, Miss., to the late Elder Rubin Nix and Mary Louise Savage Nix. Edward departed this life on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, at Jackson Health Care of Jackson, AL

At an early age, Edward united with Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Vernal, Miss. He relocated to Jackson and united with the AOH Church of God under the leadership of Bishop M. L. Tilly. Later in life, he then united with First Baptist Church of Jackson, under the leadership of Pastor Philip McDuffie, where he was a member of the choir and remained until his health failed.

Edward started his education at Leakesville School in Leakesville, Miss., prior to moving to Jackson, where he then continued his educations at Harper High School. His employment history started as a longshoreman working on a dragging boat on the Mississippi River and in the Gulf of Mexico for 12 years, then at Allied for 10 years, and later at Hamilton Sawmill until his retirement.

He enjoyed hunting, walking, going to church, and watching his favorite football team which was the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed singing with the Jackson Male Chorus.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Ruby Nix St. George, Lillie Nix Smith and Ardell Nix Poellnitz; one brother, Carl Nix; and his grandparents, James Nix and Hannah Nix, and Charles Savage and Sallie Savage.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted daughter, Debra (Jerome) Bettis of Jackson; four grandchildren, Kendrick Darrington, Jerome Darrington, Jeremela Bettis and Jaylan Bettis, all of Jackson; one adopted grandson, Jaiden McDonald of Jackson; four great-grandchildren, Karter Pugh, Bella Pugh, Nola Wiggns and Arianna Bettis, all of Jackson; two brothers, Billy Nix of Detroit, Mich., and Aaron (Cassandra) Nix of Decatur, Ga.; with a host of nieces, two devoted, Darlene Davis and Priscilla Frowner; and nephews; one devoted friend, James Carstarphen.

Public viewing will be Friday, Oct. 17, from 1:00 until 5:00p.m., at Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Saturday, Oct. 18, with viewing from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral hour, at First Baptist Church, 214 College Ave., Jackson, AL. Interment will follow in Good Hope Cemetery in Gainestown.

Henry James Foxx, Jr., a resident of Jackson, was born on July 17, 1949 to the late Virgin Williams Foxx and Henry James Foxx, Sr. He traded time for eternity on Thursday, September 27, 2025 while at Jackson Medical Center.

Early in life, Henry united with Gainestown A.O.H Church in Gainestown, AL. After relocating to Dallas, TX, he united with God Prayer House.

Henry loved to hunting, fishing, gardening and taking care of his dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgin Williams Foxx and Henry James Foxx, Sr.; his wife, Alice Marie Jackson Foxx; brothers: Joe Allen Foxx, Archie Foxx and Charlie Williams; sisters:LueReader Jackson Foxx and Pearlie Ruth Jackson; M. Debra Moss Smith was born July 5, 1955 to the parentage of the late Ernest “Son” Moss and Minnie Howze Moss. She departed this life on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at Infirmary Health Emergency Room in Saraland, AL.

Debra attended Jackson High School Class and was a member of the graduating Class of 1973. She was employed as a Teacher Aide at Gillmore Elementary. She was also employed with Moore's, Goody’s and Walmart.

Debra was united in marriage and married the “Love of Her Life” John L. Smith on February 2, 1984. “Ann” as she was lovingly called… united with Good Hope Baptist Church at an early age. There she proudly enjoyed serving on the Usher Board.

Ann enjoyed talking to people. She was a people person. She was very friendly and outgoing. She always greeted you with a smile. Debra enjoyed family gatherings, listening to music, taking care of her flowers and interacting with family and friends.

Ann leaves to cherish her legacy and her precious memories, her loving and devoted husband, John L. Terrance enjoyed spending time with his family, to know him was to love him. He was loved by many…he was one of a kind. He had his own terminology that aligned with his everyday vocabulary.

Mr. Raymond Dell Pugh, age 63, a resident of Jackson, Alabama, was born April 23, 1962, to the parentage of Pastor Odell Pugh, Sr. and Mother Clara Mae Pugh. He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at SAAD Providence Hospital.

Raymond Dell Pugh was an avid quartet singer and was a member of The Mighty Pugh Singers for many years. He would also sing with Ed Davis and The Golden Tones. When asked, he would also sing with the Evening Stars.

Raymond was employed with the Alabama State Department for many years until he became disabled. He was also an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Odell Pugh, Sr., and his mother, Clara M. Pugh; his grandparents, Bettie Martin, Gross Martin, Wallace Pugh, and Gladys Pugh; his aunts, Alice Pearl Bell; and his uncles. Willie L. Martin and George Martin.

Esther Lee Washington was born on February 4, 1964 to the late Raymond and Floree Washington of Chatom, AL.

Esther never met a stranger and always showed love and a kind heart to everyone she met. She always made sure you were fed and knew you were loved in her presence. Esther still maintained her kind disposition, even through her lupus diagnosis and other severe medical conditions.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Nickey Washington, sister, Sherry Dunn, and brothers, Kenneth Washington and Ron Washington.

She is survived by a son, Shawn Washington, of Mobile,AL.; daughters, Sherita Washington of Albuquerque, NM and Ashley Mitchell of Mobile, AL.; grandson, Jodie Mitchell, Albuquerdue, NM; sisters, Pearl (Elmo) Taylor of Waynesboro, MS., Clarissa Roberts of Houston, TX., Mary (Dean) Lord Of Farmingdale,NY and Leara Washington of Chatom, AL and a brother Don Washington of Madison,FL. Mr. Jonathan Franks, 72, a native of State Line, Mississippi and a resident of Chatom, transitioned from this life Sept. 14, 2025, at his home in Spencer, Okla.
Mr. Franks gave his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Lilly Grove Baptist Church in Chatom. Jonathan received his primary and secondary education through the Washington County School system. A strong proponent of higher education, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Central Oklahoma and a master’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

He faithfully served his country and community, having joined the United States Air Force as part of the Security Police and dedicated more than seven years to service before receiving an honorable discharge. He then enlisted in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, where he retired as First Sergeant with the rank of Master Sergeant. Jonathan was also a resolute civil servant, working for 29 years at Tinker Air Force Base as a sheet metal shop supervisor.
Mr. Franks was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren. He loved sports and staying active, enjoying walking, racquetball and basketball. He took great pride in his lawn and garden, as well as helping neighbors by repairing their lawn equipment. He was a faithful member of Tabitha Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, where he served on the security team.

Preceding him in death was his loving father, Nathaniel Franks Sr.; brothers, Nathaniel Franks Jr. and James Franks; sister, Ella Franks Woodard; grandparents, Mark Franks and Etta Franks, and Estus Lockhart and Ezella Lockhart; stepfather, Archie Bishop; with a host of uncles and aunts.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Francis Franks; sons, Howard Donaldson and Jonathan Franks; stepchildren, LaSandra, Marvin and Johnny Mixon; grandchildren, Isiah and Alicia Donaldson, Addison and Alia Franks; step-grandchild, Kendall Hamilton and 11 step-grandchildren; mother, Martha Bishop; mother-in-law, Patricia Lewis; sister, Evelyn (Earnest Sr.) Moore; two aunts, three uncles and three sisters-in-law. He will also be remembered by one niece, three nephews, neighbors and a wealth of dear friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 27, viewing will begin at 11:00am til 12-noon funeral hour at Lilly Grove Baptist Church, 98 MLK Jr. Ave., Chatom. AL. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, 1102 Ray Coaker Hwy., Chatom, with military honors.

John Alex Woodyard, Jr. transcended into the Golden Heavenly Gates on Monday, September 22, 2025. He quietly surrendered to Jesus’ call. Born to the late John Alex, Sr., and Rose Marie Barnes Woodyard.

John accepted Christ at an early age and his faith shepherd him throughout life. He was a member of St. Union Baptist Church in Leroy, Alabama. He graduated from Leroy High School in 1983. He briefly attended Alabama Southern Technical School in Thomasville, Alabama.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Juan Alex Woodyard, granddaughter Alexis Jade Woodyard and brother-in-law(s) Clifford Lee and Johnny Simmons.

On September 5, 1987, he was united in holy matrimony to Frankie Mae Benson Woodyard. This union was blessed with two sons. His laughter was immensely carried throughout when he spoke. You knew he was somewhere near when you heard his voice and laughter. He was a mentor to many truck drivers, including both of his sons.

He was employed for many years at Butts and Billingsley Asphalt, Mobile Forest, and Packaging Cooperation of America (PCA) in Jackson, Alabama. He was owner/operator of Woodyard & Sons Trucking Company until his health failed. He was a member of Truckers Making a Difference (TMD).

Lenora Parker Jackson was born August 7, 1956 in Jackson, to the parentage of the late Walter George Parker and the late Martha Ella Rodgers Parker. She departed this world September 12, 2025 from UAB Hospital, Birmingham, AL.

Lenora became a member of Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Reverend E. L. Williams.

Lenora, known as “Sister,” was the second of five children. She received formal education at Harper High School and Jackson High School in Jackson, AL. She was employed with one of the local fast-food restaurants for over fifty years of dedicated service. Lenora enjoyed cooking, shopping, watching TV, and going to church. Most of all, she loved the Lord and her beloved family.

Preceding her in death were her father; her mother; one brother, Gregory Earl Parker, Sr.; one sister, Veronica Jill Parker Jones; grandmothers: Leola Rodgers and Corine Parker; and grandfathers: Ed Rodgers and Henry Parker, Sr.

Precious memories of Lenora will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she left behind, especially the child that she left behind, her one and only daughter, April Lashun Jackson of Birmingham, AL; two sisters: Rose Mary Parker (Kenneth Perine) and Benita Faye Parker Emory both of Jackson, AL; with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; a very special nephew, Andre Parker of Oakland, CA; two devoted nieces: Melanie Parker of Dothan, AL and Shenay Parker McReynolds of Jackson, AL; best friend, Myrtis Jordan; two devoted cousins: Norma Dell Ezell, Marion Calhoun both of Jackson, AL; a devoted friend, Linda Pernell of Jackson, AL; special friends: Edna Whittle, Hattie Sampson, Annie McKenzie, Barbara Council, Ella McKenzie, Carolyn Dean, Marilyn Berry, Joenika Bryant, Marilyn Tena Crum, Augusta Bailey, Claraceen James and Stella Johnson; host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing Friday September 26, from 1:00pm til 5:00pm at Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. The service will be held on Saturday September 27, viewing will begin at 2:00pm til 3:00pm funeral hour at Mt. Olive No.2 Baptist Church 105 Griffin St. Jackson, AL. 36545 Interment will follow in the Parker Family Cemetery in Jackson, AL.

Alma Lee “Ms. Boot” Crowell of Jackson, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on Sept. 6, 2025, at the age of 98.
She was born on May 2, 1927, to Frank Nettles and Pauline Nettles in Pleasant Grove, Miss.

Alma loved football, especially cheering for the Jackson Aggies. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors tending to her flowers, which she cherished, and caring for her yard with her trusty rake broom until her health began to fail.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Luther Crowell Sr.; sons, Frank and Jessie Williams; brothers, J.D. and Abe Nettles; and grandchildren, Tracy Williams and Tawaski Crowell.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Luther (Wilma) Crowell of St. Stephen’s, LC (Sheila) Crowell of Jackson, Ronnie (Elaine) Crowell of Charleston, S.C., and Kittrell (Johnnie) Barnes of Jackson; bonus children she loved as her own, Tim (Judy) Prater of Georgia and Alexandria (Walter) Bluing of Antioch, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren, two preceding her in death, including four especially devoted, Eriskey Crowell, Johnnqueshia Barnes, Damien Martin and Lazaarus Crowell; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, including one especially devoted, great-grandchild, Madisyn Morris and a devoted grest grandchild, Trakala Crowell; siblings, Edna (James) Dubose of Jackson and John (Dora) Nettles of Pensacola, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Gladys Lanier, Helen Lanier and Loretta Nettles; two devoted cousins, Vera McDonald and Orange Gray; nieces and nephews, including one devoted, Dana Hobson of Little Rock, Ark.; special friends, Myra (Warren) Pendleton, Tommy King and Ann Walker; and caregiver, LaTia Brown.

The service will be held on Saturday September 20, viewing will begin at 12noon til the 1:00pm funeral at Jackson Street Baptist Church 516 Jackson Street Jackson, AL. 36545. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Jackson, AL.
