How can you tell if your horse is loving their massage session? Horses have all kinds of ways to show us they’re enjoying their bodywork—it’s just a matter of knowing what to look for! Some signs your horse is feeling relaxed and happy include: soft relaxed eyes, a droopy lower lip, deeper or slower breathing, yawning, licking and chewing, leaning into the massage, stretching during or after the session, or even resting a leg. Every horse is unique in how they communicate with some being more expressive than others. The key is tuning in and learning their individual “language.” They’re always communicating, we just have to listen

9 years (and one day 😂) ago I became certified to help horses and dogs in need as a sports massage therapist. This has become more than a job but a passion. Being a massage therapist has given me some of the greatest opportunities to meet wonderful horses and people and make a difference one animal at a time! Here’s to the next 9!

Every horse is different, which means they all let you know in their own way if they like the session. Some are very “expressive” and let out big yawns and stretches, and others are more subtle like Lex who you can see was letting me know he was relaxing and enjoying his light session by slow blinking and licking and chewing! It’s all about reading the horse you are working on and catering to their unique needs!

Even I am so impressed with these results! Check out these before and after videos of a horse I worked on over the weekend. Mufasa suffers from horrible ringbone that has taken a turn for the worst over the last few weeks. His owner has taken every step to help him feel comfortable including working with her vet, farrier, and even discussing surgery options. She said he has good days and bad days and has sent me the first video to show me how bad the bad days can be, before our appointment. She was overjoyed to share the second video, after our appointment, showcasing how well he responded after just one light treatment! Mufasa still has a long road to recovery but I am grateful to be a part of his pain management plan and am hoping for the best for this sweet boy and his loving mom❤️

Throughout my years of massaging I found one thing consistent: horses, just like humans, carry a lot of tension in their shoulders no matter the discipline. The shoulder muscles of a horse play a crucial role in movement, particularly in lifting and extending the forelimb during walking, trotting, cantering, and jumping. These muscles are located around the scapula (shoulder blade) and upper humerus and are essential for forward reach, stability, and strength. There are many muscles that make up the shoulder including the Trapezius and Rhomboideus which lift and move the shoulder. The Serratus ventralis which supports the trunk between the forelimbs. The deltoid which helps flex the shoulder and move the leg outward. Finally the supraspinatus and infraspinatus which stabilize and extend the shoulder joint. A perfect symphony of muscles that work together to allow for smooth, powerful, and coordinated motion in the forelimbs!
