Mason Lee Henson, 79 of River Caney, Kentucky departed this earthly life Sunday, April 5, 2026 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Hazard, Kentucky. Born on September 6, 1946 in Lost Creek, Kentucky, Mason lived a life rooted in hard work, dedication to his family, and a deep connection to his community.
Mason spent his career as a heavy equipment operator, first working in the strip mines before dedicating many years to the Breathitt County Road Department from which he retired. His skill and commitment to his work left a lasting impact on those who worked alongside him and the community he served.
Above all else, Mason cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Shirley Engle Henson. Together they built a loving home and raised their children: Mason Jr. Henson (Vickie) and their daughter, MaKayla Lynn; Timothy Dean Henson (Anissa) and their sons, Tyler, Zach and Caleb; Victor Brian Henson (Kim) and their daughter, Hannah; and Angelia Kay Henson. Mason also held a special bond with Neil Mullins, whom he cherished like a son.
Mason’s siblings include brothers, Willie Henson, Jerry Henson and Ceasar John Henson (Cheryl), as well as his sister, Barbara Neace. He was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Cassie (Baker) Henson; and brothers, Kash Henson, Jacob Henson, Charlie Henson, Donnie Henson and Lonnie Henson.
In addition to his professional accomplishments and family devotion, Mason found joy in tending to his garden and spending time with loved ones. His love for family was evident in every aspect of his life.
Visitation for Mason will be held Friday, April 10, 2026 at the Breathitt Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a singing service to begin at 7:00 PM. His funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, at 1:00 PM with Danny White officiating.
Burial will follow in the Jackson Cemetery with Willie Ray Henson, Jerry Jr. Henson, Kash Johnny Henson, Lonnie Gwin Neace, Steven Neace, William Noble and Neil Mullins serving as pallbearers.
Mason’s memory will be treasured by all who knew him. May his legacy of hard work and love bring comfort to those he leaves behind.
