Today, on Veterans Day, we pause in solemn gratitude and deep respect to honor all those who answered our country’s call to service. At the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, we live by the principle that our commitment to Veterans is not simply a promise—it is a daily responsibility. Veterans put us first when they committed to serve in the armed forces. Now, it is our turn to put Veterans first.

To every Veteran who sacrificed—of time, effort, comfort, and sometimes more—we say thank you. You have defended our ideals, lifted our nation, and trusted us with your care. And so, we rededicate ourselves today to deliver world-class health care, benefits, and services with respect, compassion, and excellence.

We also recognize the unique insight of our own workforce—many of our staff have walked in your shoes. They understand your journey, your challenges, and your triumphs. That connection drives everything we do.

As we reflect this Veterans Day, let us honor the generations of men and women who stood tall for our nation. Let us reaffirm our promise to you: we will listen, we will serve, we will strive to improve. Because you deserve nothing less.

Thank you for your service. We are privileged to serve you.

Our first-ever Veterans Day Parade and Car Show brought smiles, cheers, and a whole lot of community pride. From the rumble of engines and the shine of chrome to the waving flags and heartfelt salutes, it was a day all about honoring our Veterans!

The campus came alive with energy as Veterans, families, staff, and community partners joined together to celebrate service and sacrifice. A huge thank you to every volunteer, parade participant, and car show exhibitor who made this inaugural event possible.

On Friday, we had the privilege of hosting our 2025 Veterans Day Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony where we recognized eight remarkable Veterans whose service and leadership continue to inspire us all. The ceremony brought together Veterans, families, and staff to celebrate their powerful stories and reflect on the true meaning of service.

Congratulations to this year’s inductees: Dr. David M. Walker (U.S. Air Force), Dr. Robert Henderson Smith, Sr. (U.S. Army), Dr. Dexter Marvell Brookins (U.S. Army), John J. Pitchford, Jr. (U.S. Air Force), Jeffrey Adams (U.S. Army), Joe Albert Dettor (U.S. Army), Lucius Wright (U.S. Army), and Kayla Michelle Riggs (U.S. Army).

It was an early start at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center as cars began lining up before 6 a.m. for our Veterans Day Drive-Thru Food Pantry and Turkey Giveaway. By the end of the morning, nearly 500 Veterans received groceries and turkeys to help make their Thanksgiving meals complete.

This effort was made possible through the hard work of volunteers, community partners, and donors who came together to honor and support our Veterans. Their dedication ensures that no Veteran goes without during the holiday season.

For information about volunteering or donating to future food pantry events, contact the Center for Development & Civic Engagement at 601-364-1391.

Congratulations to U.S. Navy Veteran Otis Smith, who received a refurbished vehicle through Progressive Insurance’s 2025 Keys to Progress® program! The program helps Veterans overcome transportation barriers and gain the independence they need to move forward in their careers and lives.

After serving from 2001–2010, Mr. Smith worked hard to rebuild his life through VA’s HUD-VASH and Compensated Work Therapy programs. With determination—and a little help from his VA care team—he’s now steering toward new opportunities and greater independence.

November is , and yesterday the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center hosted a Lung Cancer Screening Awareness Event in the Atrium as part of the White House Cancer Moonshot Initiative and National Lung Cancer Screening Day.

Veterans, staff, and visitors learned about the importance of early detection and available screening options for those at higher risk. Our clinicians and care teams were on hand to answer questions and provide information about lung health, prevention, and the resources VA offers to support Veterans.

Together, we’re raising awareness, promoting prevention, and saving lives—because early detection makes all the difference.
