The snow and ice that's been sitting for weeks is finally melting, and of course we're already hearing we might get more Sunday night into Monday. 😒

Before the next round hits, we wanted to share a quick guide on what to expect once things clear out for real. Long snow cover can leave lawns looking matted, patchy, and a little rough at first, and sometimes snow mold shows up too. The good news is a lot of it is normal and manageable, as long as you know what you're looking at.

Here's what to look for and what to do next. 🌱❄️

After snow melts in New Jersey, expect matted grass, patchy color, and possible snow mold. Learn what’s normal, what to watch, and how to help your lawn recover.

Most problem w**ds start long before you ever see them. As soil temperatures rise, seeds germinate quietly below the surface. By the time w**ds are visible, they're already established and harder to control.

Early-season applications are designed to interrupt that process before it starts, helping reduce w**d pressure and giving your turf the space it needs to grow in thick and resilient. The same can be said for w**ds in landscape beds, rock areas, and pavers, where early control is just as important. Getting treatments in place before the weather really warms up makes a noticeable difference later in the season. 🌱

Planning ahead now means fewer w**ds to battle, less stress on your lawn, and a smoother start to spring. If you have questions about timing or what your lawn needs this year, our team is happy to help.

With snow and ice covering most natural food sources right now, deer are feeding more aggressively on shrubs, hedges, and evergreens throughout the area. ❄️🦌 Landscapes where plants stay exposed are taking the brunt of that pressure.

This is why winter is often when we start seeing shrubs chewed back, tips stripped, and evergreens thinned out. It doesn’t take much. Repeated browsing over just a few weeks can leave plants stressed long before spring arrives.

Deer control helps discourage that feeding behavior by making plants less appealing, helping protect vulnerable areas as conditions change through winter and into the growing season.

If deer feeding has increased around your property lately, now is a good time to get on a deer control program. Give us a call to get started!

Yews are one of the most dependable evergreen shrubs for New Jersey. They tolerate shade better than many evergreens, respond well to pruning, and hold their shape through snow, wind, and temperature swings. That combination is why they’re commonly used in foundation plantings, hedges, and more formal layouts.

They’re also long-lived and slow to change, which makes them easier to manage over time compared to faster-growing shrubs that need constant correction.

One thing worth noting is deer pressure. Yews are a favorite for deer browsing, especially in winter, and repeated feeding can lead to thinning or uneven growth in unprotected areas. 🦌

Yews don’t need much attention, but they benefit from well-drained soil, protection from winter salt, and careful pruning. With those basics in place, they remain one of the most dependable shrubs in the landscape.

Questions about the evergreens on your property or how they’re holding up this winter? Our team is happy to take a look.

Sunscald is a type of winter injury that occurs when bark warms up during sunny winter days, then rapidly refreezes as temperatures drop at night. That repeated stress damages the living tissue just beneath the bark.

It often appears as long vertical cracks, peeling or flaking bark, or darkened, sunken areas on the trunk. Damage is most common on the south or southwest side, where winter sun exposure is strongest. In many cases, symptoms become more noticeable in late winter or early spring.

Once bark is compromised, trees become more vulnerable to pests, disease, and long-term decline.

What helps reduce the risk:
• Maintaining tree vigor year-round so bark can handle sudden warming and freezing
• Protecting young or thin-barked trees during winter
• Catching damage early before secondary issues develop

If you’re noticing cracking or peeling bark, our team can evaluate the tree and recommend next steps to support recovery and long-term tree vigor. 🌿

January in NJ is usually where color goes to die. While every other shrub in your yard is hunkering down and playing dead, Winter Heath is actively showing off. It doesn’t just tolerate the frost—it uses the snow as a backdrop. ❄️

The Homeowner Favorite: This isn't just another garden center shrub. Native to the rugged subalpine slopes of the Alps, Winter Heath was bred to survive the harshest conditions imaginable.

Homeowners love it because it’s a "set it and forget it" groundcover that actually rewards you during the bleakest months of the year. It stays tight to the earth and creates a dense evergreen mat that chokes out early spring w**ds before they can even start.

🦌 Deer Resistant: They will typically walk right past it for something else.
❄️ Salt Tolerant: It handles the spray from your driveway or the street without browning out.
🪻 Winter Bloom: Those bells are real and they are at their peak right now.

Our winter property evaluations are open for January. Contact us to ensure your landscape is healthy and prepared for the season ahead. 🌱
