LIFE of Mississippi

LIFE of Mississippi LIFE of Mississippi is the center for independent living for the state and we are dedicated to the empowerment of people with significant disabilities.

LIFE of Mississippi is the "non-profit center for independent living" created through federal legislation in 1992. LIFE has enhanced the lives of over 35,000 individuals with disabilities since 1993. Building on our strengths, we have provided information to more than 170,000 people. We reach all four corners of the state and serve every county. No matter how old you are or where you live in Mississippi – we can help. Our Board members and staff live with disabilities. We know what disability means to you. LIFE services are provided at no cost. We have the expertise and are committed to making your LIFE better. All LIFE offices are:

Consumer-Controlled
(directed by people with severe disabilities through consumer Boards and staffs);

Cross-Disability
(not limited to any one or more disability groups);

Community-Based
(providing services in the community); and

Nonresidential
(focused on non-institutional settings).

LaShawn Benita Harley-Hill’s journey proves that true determination knows no bounds. After losing her sight, LaShawn faced immense challenges in her pursuit of higher education, but she never gave up on her dreams. Last month, at 54 years old, she graduated with a master’s degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport, showcasing incredible resilience. With the support of her community, LaShawn utilized adaptive learning tools and accessible resources to navigate the academic world. Her achievement is a powerful reminder that age and disability are not limitations — they are obstacles to overcome.

This past week, LIFE of Mississippi was proud to assist FEMA and MEMA in distributing essential items to individuals and families impacted across the state.

These supplies—ranging from basic necessities to independent living supports—are critical in helping individuals with disabilities maintain safety, stability, and independence in their communities.

Our team worked side-by-side with emergency response partners to ensure that resources reached those in need, reinforcing our mission to empower Mississippians with disabilities to live independently with dignity and choice.

We thank FEMA, MEMA, and our dedicated staff and volunteers for making this coordinated effort a success.

💙 LIFE of Mississippi – Promoting Opportunity, Wellness, Empowerment, and Recreation across the state.
