What to Do If You Slip and Fall This Winter 🤕
Slips and falls are more common this time of year, especially with melting ice, wet pavement, and uneven surfaces hiding underneath. Whether it happens in a parking lot, on your front steps, or getting out of your car, knowing what to do after a fall can make a big difference in your recovery.
First, take a moment before jumping back up. Check how you feel and notice any pain, dizziness, or difficulty moving. If you hit your head, feel lightheaded, or have sharp pain, stay still and ask for help if someone is nearby.
If you’re able to move safely, get up slowly. Roll onto your side, push yourself up to a seated position, and use a sturdy object like a railing or car door for support. Avoid sudden movements that could worsen an injury.
Apply ice to sore areas for 15–20 minutes to help reduce swelling. If you have minor aches, rest and gentle movement can help prevent stiffness over the next day or two.
Watch for warning signs that need medical attention. Seek care if you experience ongoing pain, swelling, numbness, trouble walking, limited movement, severe bruising, or any head injury symptoms like headache, nausea, confusion, or vision changes.
Most importantly, don’t ignore your body. Some injuries don’t show up immediately and can worsen if left untreated.
