Wednesday, Feb. 25 update:

We are making significant progress in responding to the cyberattack and restoring our systems.

All hospitals and Emergency Departments in Jackson, Madison County, Holmes County and Grenada are open.

Regularly scheduled clinic appointments and elective procedures will be cancelled through Friday. All cancelled appointments will be rescheduled soon.

Patients with time-sensitive needs can call the automated UMMC Triage Line at 601-815-0000. Patients who contact us and require urgent care will be contacted directly to schedule a clinic visit today through Friday.

Through diligent and around-the-clock work, we are hopeful that we will be able to resume elective procedures and regular clinic operations as early as Monday. Our ability to do this will be clearer over the next couple of days.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

The UMMC Triage Line has been set up for calls from patients. The telephone number is 601-815-0000. For medical emergencies, call 911.

Requests for time-sensitive needs, such as medication refills or postoperative care visits, will be prioritized.

What to expect when you call

Please speak clearly when prompted to provide your name, callback number, date of birth, who you are trying to reach and your reason for calling. People calling for prescription refills should have on hand the medication name and dosage, plus the name, address and telephone number of their pharmacy.

About the call back

Messages will be routed to the appropriate person for a return phone call, in as timely a manner as possible. Please be aware your return call may be from a non-UMMC number. Return calls may be delayed as we anticipate a high volume of calls daily from across the state.

Please do not call multiple times. Repeated calls will slow our ability to respond.

We apologize for this interruption of our services. Teams are working around the clock to restore full operations and help as many people as quickly as we possibly can.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

We Press On

Good morning.

Today’s VC Notes isn’t what was planned. However, considering the current situation, I switched direction. Momma said there’d be days like this.

Despite our robust and often-tested network security system, we have experienced a cyberattack. Yes, it was a ransomware attack.

To use a medical phrase – we have stopped the bleeding. And while we know much more now than we did 24 hours ago, the extent and the scope of the intrusion is still not fully understood. Our technical teams and a host of experts in the field of cyberattacks and federal agencies are working around the clock to answer these questions and segregate systems, repair damage and recover our data and applications. Our electronic health record and our phone systems are included in the attack and are not operational. To be super cautious we took down all our systems for testing to be sure they are safe to use. I am so very sorry that we cannot reach out by text, email or calls to all the patients who have had care interrupted.

The technical aspect of this situation is not my expertise and not the topic for today. What I want to share with you are these points regarding patient care:

• For our inpatient operations – we are using downtime procedures (this means using paper for documentation and patient orders). We prepare for this scenario, and we are taking good care of our patients. (We have had to obtain extra paper and extra toner for printers!)
• We cancelled clinic operations statewide and elective procedures for Thursday and Friday. That doesn’t happen but in the most extreme of situations.
• We are doing all we can to safely restore access so that we can resume all aspects of patient care as quickly as possible.
• We are especially concerned for those receiving ongoing care that is time sensitive – so those patients are our highest priority - for example, a cancer patient receiving chemotherapy. We are working on a process to schedule appointments for those groups as quickly as we can.
• For our patients with an urgent or emergent need, our Emergency Departments are open and providing care.

Lastly, I want to say a HUGE thank you to the many, many, many people who have reached out to us with offers of assistance or simply words of support. It has been tremendous.

I want to say this clearly: You have rallied in an astonishing manner. All hands-on deck. No questions asked except – “How can we help?” and “What do we need to do?”. All with the eye toward being sure our patients are well taken care of and those who have had outpatient care (or any care) disrupted can be reached and rescheduled as soon as possible. Our doctors, our nurses, our staff and our leaders care deeply for our patients.

I can’t tell you when – but I can promise as soon as we possibly can – we will be back up and running full steam ahead. The bad guys won’t keep us down.

Please be aware that emails, texts and calls you receive about closures of UMMC clinics or requests to send communications are legitimate. Those are sent by an off-site vendor that we activated due to our electronic medical record, Epic, being down. Examples are shown here. It is safe but not necessary to click the links. We are sorry for the confusion.

Feb. 20, 2026

Medical Center teams are working around the clock in response to Thursday’s cyberattack. Federal authorities continue to assist us, including specialized FBI teams that are onsite. We have engaged the services of three national vendors that are experts in situations like ours including in cyber forensics, recovery and security. At this time, it is still unknown the extent of the infiltration or how long it will take to return to regular operations. Alongside our own UMMC IT and information security teams, we appreciate the assistance of experts in these fields.

Our phone systems and ability to receive or send emails remain down or not reliable.

Our hospitals and Emergency Departments continue to provide safe, needed care and we’ve alerted other hospitals that we can again start receiving transfers of patients needing a higher-level of care. The phone number to contact Mississippi MED-COM to inquire about a patient transfer is 601-362-4264. Also, ambulance services have been notified that we are no longer on diversion.

We are working on a solution for patients to contact us about routine medical and/or medication needs. We will publicly share that pathway once available.

Also, we are reaching out to patients who are receiving time-sensitive treatments, for example, chemotherapy, to set up appointments.

We apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced because of this criminal intrusion into our networks. Our hope is that we can soon return to normal operations and return to fully serving Mississippi’s needs.

02/19/2026

We continue to work with federal authorities and national experts in cyberattack response as we evaluate the extent of the attack and our next steps. We expect this to be a multi-day event and will communicate helpful information, when available.

UMMC clinics statewide will again be closed tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 20, and elective procedures are cancelled. Appointments will be rescheduled. One exception is the dialysis clinic at the Jackson Medical Mall, which is operational and open for scheduled appointments.

UMMC hospitals and Emergency Departments will remain open the duration of this incident unless we communicate otherwise.

In-person classes remain as scheduled, but online classes are cancelled for tomorrow.

We are sorry for this disruption, and we are working diligently to restore our systems and services as soon as possible.

02/19/2026

Feb. 19, 2026 at 12:30 p.m.

We continue to evaluate the impact of today’s cyberattack on our network systems.

All our hospitals and Emergency Departments remain operational using downtime procedures. Our clinics statewide have been closed today and appointments will be rescheduled.

We have activated our Emergency Operations Plan and are working with authorities including the FBI and Homeland Security, who are helping us to evaluate this situation and determine next steps.

We are still evaluating the extent of systems impacted. As a precaution, we have shut down all our network systems and will conduct risk assessments before bringing anything back online.

In-person class schedules remain normal.

Feb. 19, 2026

Due to a cybersecurity attack, many UMMC IT systems are down, including access to our electronic medical records, Epic.
Today, all UMMC clinic locations statewide are closed.

Outpatient and ambulatory surgeries/procedures and imaging appointments are cancelled and will be rescheduled. Hospital services are continuing for our patients using downtime procedures.

We apologize for this unexpected disruption, and we will provide further updates as information is available.

OUR STORY

Website: www.umc.edu

The University of Mississippi Medical Center, located in Jackson, is the state's only academic health science center. UMMC includes seven health science schools: medicine, nursing, dentistry, health related professions, graduate studies, population health, and pharmacy. (The School of Pharmacy is headquartered on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford.) Enrollment in all programs is more than 3,000 students.

The Medical Center's three-part mission is to improve the lives of Mississippians by educating tomorrow's health care professionals, by conducting health sciences research, and by providing cutting-edge patient care. A major goal of the Medical Center is the elimination of differences in health status of Mississippians based on race, geography, income, or social status.

Integral to its education and research missions, UMMC provides wide-ranging patient care programs. Three specialized hospitals on the Jackson campus include the only children's hospital in Mississippi, a women and infants' hospital, and a critical care hospital, along with University Hospital. UMMC offers the only Level 1 trauma center, the only Level 4 neonatal intensive care nursery unit, and the only organ transplant programs in the state, in addition to many other referral services. University Physicians, the faculty group practice of the School of Medicine, includes about 500 doctors, many of them among leaders in their field, who care for patients in the hospitals and clinics on campus, around the Jackson metro area, and in outreach clinics around the state. UMMC includes two community hospitals, UMMC Holmes County and UMMC Grenada.
