🚫STOP! DON’T WASH THAT BABY🚫

Ever wondered what that white cheesy substance is on your fresh baby? It’s called Vernix! It starts to form on your baby’s skin around 20 weeks. What’s exactly in vernix?🤔 Scientists have identified lipids, amino acids, proteins, antibacterial, and antimicrobial compounds such as:

wax and sterol esters
ceramides
squalene
cholesterol
triglycerides
phospholipids
and amino acids, asparagine and glutamine

61% of these proteins can only be found in vernix 🤗

What are the uses of Vernix? 📚
📌it acts as antibacterial agent to protect baby inside and outside the womb
📌protective covering while going through the birth canal
📌allows baby to pick up good back bacteria and leave behind overgrowth of bad bacteria
📌protects baby from meconium exposure(baby’s first p**p)
📌it acts as insulation by maintaining your baby’s body temperature. Infants who are immediately washed have a significantly higher rate of heat loss
📌acts as a lubricant and decreases friction during birth and reducing infant trauma
📌it smells like mama and helps keep baby calm after birth
📌your baby swallows Vernix in the womb. The same proteins found in vernix are the same as those in breastmilk. This helps baby’s digestive tract to be ready to breastfeed.
📌keeps baby’s skin soft and subtle

Why do nurses rub it off? 🤔
Many policies in the hospital system are outdated but still practiced. We were taught that Vernix was a risk of germs. You can ask staff to please reduce rubbing of baby to preserve Vernix on baby’s skin! When baby has his first skin to skin contact with you, this is the perfect time to rub it in, not rub it off.

MAJORITY OF VERNIX IS ABSORBED 24 HOURS AFTER BIRTH BUT ISNT FULLY ABSORBED TILL 5-6 DAYS AFTER BIRTH! LETS GIVE OUR BABIES TIME ABSORB THIS DELICIOUS CREAM THAT SCIENTISTS ARE SO DESPERATELY TRYING TO DUPLICATE BUT CANNOT!

You can see the power in this contraction.

You can almost feel this laboring mother’s strength as she works to bring her baby into the world.

Laboring women often fear the strength of their own contractions.
Will they be too strong?
Will they be able to handle them?
Will they hurt to much?
Will they make labor unbearable?
Will she need an epidural?

❤️❤️❤️Mama, believe in your power and strength. Your labor contractions are created by your body so they cannot be too strong. They are just as strong as you are.

Oh that first week of newborn snuggles🤱

The first week home with a newborn is full of all sorts of new adjustments. Some things you maybe weren't expecting or prepared for.

If you had a natural delivery you little one may have a cone shaped head, not to worry this usually passes by a month old.

Your babe my also have some bruising or swelling on their face and head which is also COMPLETELY normal.

It is also not unexpected for baby to lose up to %10 of their birth weight.

If baby is sleeping all day and up all night, there's a perfectly good explanation. While their in our womb we are active during the day and essentially "rock them to sleep". At night when we lay down to rest, we are no longer rocking them, therefore babe usually becomes more active, ever notice this?

Jaundice or yellowing of babes skin or eyes is to be expected to a certain extent as well. Putting them in front of a window to absorb some indirect sunlight is the best way to help your baby absorb the vitamin D they need to break down the bilirubin stored in their liver.

*Babe's levels should be tested at birth, 2 day appointment and 2 week appointment to make sure levels aren't too high to require blue light and are dropping like they should.

Breastfeeding is one of the most rewarding yet challenging parts of becoming a mother. The cracked ni***es, struggles latching, frequent cluster feedings, and being used as a pacifier are all normal steps on the breastfeeding journey.

If you're LO struggles to stay awake while feeding, don't fret too much. As long as they are still gaining weight, they are growing when they're sleeping. To help get the most effective feed:change babies diaper, feed, play, sleep, repeat. You want baby to eat at their most awake point, not eat to sleep. This will also help tremendously with developing a nighttime routine that doesn't require nursing your little one to bed every night as they get older and start sleeping through the night.

Teaching our littles how to emotionally regulate is such an important responsibility as parents. It starts with validating how they feel and holding space for their big emotions. If we can't keep ourselves calm for them, how can we expect them to calm themselves.

If you struggle with keeping yourself calm when your child is having a meltdown. You're not alone. Remember you are safe. There is no danger and it will pass.
