Minding mental health is crucial. This is, by far, one of the most heart wrenching situations I seen, during my awakening and becoming a skilled mental health professionals. This kid achieved his dream of becoming an NFL players, 2-year , celebrated for an outstanding play and touchdown only two days prior to a mental health crisis. It breaks my heart.
Most often mental illness is overlooked, due to invisible cantankerous thoughts, mental anguish and emotions. Many are the silent cries, aloneness in the dark. Overt signs are misunderstood and/or ignored, until one is in crisis. Minding mental health is about being proactive and responsive rather than reactive. What am I saying?
1. Proactive is to make your mental health a priority. Spend more energy, resources and time minding your mental health. The most valuable investment you can make is on your mind and spirit. Make it a priority.
2. Responsiveness is taking time out to heal. When you find you are struggling to overcome anything, seek the advice and support of a professional, especially when family is not enough. Secondly, be attentive and responsive to the need of family members. Talk about intervention strategies. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to talk about concerns. It shouldn’t take a crisis to ask for help or a call before a crisis.
3. Reactivity is doing nothing, until there is a crisis.
