Its purpose is to promote interest in genealogical research and the preservation of family history. Annual membership dues are $15.00 (single) and $20.00 for a two-member household. The membership year begins in September and members will receive four issues of our Tree Talk publication per membership year. A single issue of Tree Talk is $4.00.

The Cherokee County Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet at 3 PM, Monday, March 11, 2024 in the community meeting room of the Rusk Public Library (aka Singletary Memorial Library) located at 207 E. 6th Street in Rusk.

The program topic will be in keeping with March being recognized as Women’s History Month. The title is “Honoring Our Women Ancestors.” Society members will be asked to present a brief sketch about one of their favorite women on their family tree.

The Cherokee County Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet at 3 PM, Monday, September11, 2023, in the community meeting room of the Rusk Public Library (aka Singletary Memorial Library) located at 207 E. 6th Street in Rusk.

The program will be presented by LuAnn Mannix of Rusk. The topic will be about using the Ancestry computer genealogy program available on the internet by subscription. Ms. Mannix is a retired public school educator whose primary subject matter was computer science.

Come to see us at TOMATO FEST. We will be in the VANISHING TEXANA MUSEUM, 302 S. Bolton from 8 a.m. TO 3 p.m. Saturday., June 10th. We will be next to the Cherokee County Historical Commisison.

The Cherokee County Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet at 3 PM, Monday, May 8th in the community meeting room of the Rusk Public Library (aka Singletary Memorial Library) located at 207 E. 6th Street in Rusk.

After a brief, important business meeting in the library meeting room, CCGS members will adjourn to the Cherokee County Court House for a tour of various county offices in the Cherokee County Court House. The original program plan was to tour the district clerk’s office. A jury call has been posted for that day on that office’s web site. The exact offices to be toured will be determined just prior to the society meeting depending upon county business being conducted the day. In April the society toured the County Clerk’s office. Early last fall one of the program speakers for CCGS was District Attorney Elmer Beckworth.

Cherokee County Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet at 3 PM, Monday, January 9, 2023 in the community meeting room of the Rusk Public Library (aka Singletary Memorial Library) located at 207 E. 6th Street in Rusk. The program topic will be announced later.

One CCGS project is to provide unspecified matching monetary awards to youth in the county for completing family and historical related research projects either individually or through youth organizations such as 4-H Club and Scouting badges and projects. The standards for such projects can be found on the Texas State Genealogical Society Web page. Interested youth will be given the opportunity to speak about their research projects at a CCGS meeting and to have their research project considered for publication in the society’s quarterly magazine, “TREE TALK.”

Cherokee County Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet at 3 PM, Monday, December 12, 2022, in the community meeting room of the Rusk Public Library (aka Singletary Memorial Library) located at 207 E. 6th Street in Rusk. Light refreshments will be served after the meeting.

The December program will be the always popular “SHOW AND TELL.” While emphasis will be on family photographs and photography, any genealogy and family history topic is welcome to be presented CCGS officers said.

A special invitation has been extended to area youth to come after school and share their photography projects. Youth and/or youth leaders are being asked to contact the CCGS ahead of time, if possible, to make arrangements to participate immediately after their school day.

At their September meeting the CCGS voted to officially provide unspecified matching monetary awards to youth in the county for completing family and historical related research projects either individually or through youth organizations such as 4-H Club and Scouting badges and projects. The standards for such projects can be found on the Texas State Genealogical Society Web page. Click on Awards at the top of the page, then look for writing projects and then student writing projects, Category VIII at the end of that page. Interested youth will be given the opportunity to speak about their research at a CCGS meeting and to have their research project considered for publication in the society’s quarterly magazine, “TREE TALK.”
