Wine is a tough business, but it's easier with friends. Wayne and I took a quick trip to the finger lakes to visit some old and new friends.

I got my eyes on some good side netting systems to keep the birds off and watch the mechanical harvesters in action . While we will never have scale of operation like that, it is pretty amazing to watch the efficiency of the machine! Found some out of the box growers of hybrids with some great wines too!

Enjoy the fall friends...just a few more days until the Olympic season begins in Italy!

A 5 day stopover in Piedmont was needed after a long coaching season. Carne cruda, tajarin, and all the culinary classics, but more importantly a restful time reconnecting with friends across the zone.

The upcoming 2021 vintage is incredible... elegance, lift and polish. Many wines are enjoyable now, but with the balance to go the distance. As with every trip I bring home lots of ideas to refine the winery concept in Jay. Here we go!

As I finish my last day of skeleton tour my mind wanders forward to the vineyard in Jay. When I get home we will take some row measurements to put in orders for the 2025 phase of planting. Marquette, Itasca, and the Pearls will factor in this year as they are more known quantities, which we need more of for production volumes.

When you have limited space to plant proceeding slowly is the way to go. Hell, even if you're a big vineyard it's wise to be prudent. How will we know what works when you're on the edge of a new frontier? We won't...until years down the line, so patience and diversification is the strategy.

That brings us to one of the more unknown quantities (to me) here in Jay, St Croix. Another University of Minnesota hybrid, this grape ripens relatively early and at low acidities and sugar levels. While I don't currently see it as a single varietal wine for us, it would certainly play a role in blending. It has a very spicy and savory profile when harvested early, something not easily found in hybrids. Let's call it the pepper shaker in the spice cabinet :)

Looking forward to getting to know you more St. Croix.

The last two pictures are from today's adventure along the gulf of Riga, while the second is today's sunrise over the lower block in Jay.

Next up in new grapes of the Adirondacks, Petite Pearl! πŸ‡

it's one of the most recent additions by Tom Plotcher (2010) to the hybrid grape world. Destined for lovers of full bodied and concentrated red wines, this πŸ‡ is loaded with concentration πŸ’£. Small clusters and thick skins provide everything needed to make a robust red wine with some oomph while its lower acidity level supports that silky smooth texture so rare in hybrid grapes.

We currently have this planted in our hillside block in poor red sand soils sitting atop varved clay at 12-16". So far this block is establishing slower than the lower block where soils are deeper, but we fully expect power and low concentration from this block with a little more TLC and soil regeneration from cover cropping.

An important part of understanding the decisions involved in starting a winery is having mentorship from those who have lived it for generations. We are very fortunate to have the supportive friends all over the winemaking world as we begin this journey. πŸ™ It was a great break from the skeleton season in Barolo under sunny skies with lots of friendship and laughter. Leaving here with plenty of inspiration πŸ₯‚ πŸ₯‚

Meet this week's featured grape variety, Frontenac Blanc. Much like the grape, Frontenac has 3 color mutations, Gris, Blanc and Rouge.Β

I confess I took the Frontenac Rouge out of our old vineyard over 10 years ago because it struggled to ripen it's acidity here in Jay. The Gris always performed well for us, particularly with a small amount of residual sugar in the final wine. Frontenac Blanc is a more recent addition. The first white mutations of Frontenac Rouge were observed in Quebec in 2005. It was isolated and then planted in larger quantities from 2010-2020.

For us this will be an experiment for a neutral dry white and sparkling variety. It ripens slightly earlier than its cousins and early reports show that when picked early it can have grassy and herbal Sauvignon Blanc like aromas. For us we are hopeful that this adds the elusive "neutral white" variety to our mix.Β

Will it bring you bubbly joy, a crisp neutral white, or both here at Crows Landing? Time will tell!

As I travel around the world for skeleton season I want to preview some of our grape varieties that are opening up wine growing here in the Adirondacks. I'm already itching to get back and plant more grapes this spring!

Β

Today’s Grape is Itasca, which is named for the Lake at the head of the Mississippi River. This ultra-cold hardy University of Minnesota cultivar can withstand temperatures as low as -30F. The vine buds relatively early, making spring frost a risk, but ripens to good sugar levels and great acidities that line up perfectly for dry white wine and sparkling wine. It is highly resistant to mildews and is suited well for no spray viticulture. Out of all the grapes that we have planted which we haven’t made yet, this is one that we are most excited for, particularly for dry white wine.

Next tour stop, Pyeongchang, Korea

Mindful Moments:
At times, life can feel hazy, as though a gentle mist has settled, making it hard to see the joy that lies within. Yet, just as the mountains stand firm beneath the morning fog, the foundation of happiness is always present within us. It's only our thoughts that cloud its view.

Throughout the day, give yourself the gift of stillness. Take a breath, even for just two minutes each hour, if that's all you can offer. This small act can create a meaningful shift.

Pause and ask yourself, "What do I truly need in this moment?"
Listen softly to the answer that comes.

In between the rain, thunder and lightning, the mountains look beautiful 😍
