🕊️ Ms. Gloria K. Berhorst passed from this life on March 31, 2026 at her home in Meta. She was born on November 10,1959 in Mary’s Home to the late Herbert Berhorst and Annabell C. (Holtmeyer) Schmutzler. She was baptized into the Catholic faith at Our Lady of Snows Church in Mary’s Home.

Gloria was a lifelong resident of mid-Missouri where she worked in the hospitality and food service business. She was a long-term employee of Bones Restaurant. She felt a special kinship to the college students she served as they gathered to study at Country Kitchen in Columbia.

Her greatest joy was her daughter Amandabelle , whom she loved cuddling with and instilled a ferocious love for reading and knowledge. In her home, no child was a stranger, and she was a mother to many even before having a daughter of her own. She will be remembered for her laughter that could be heard through walls, the gravel in her voice, a tune constantly being hummed, and her unwavering acceptance of others.

The best parts of her are still here in the way she loved so many; teaching lessons to women for generations to come. She brought laughter and excitement to many of the large family gatherings that she attended. No matter the circumstances, Gloria brought life, joy, and love wherever she went, truly a light to so many.

She is survived by her daughter: Amandabelle Dawdy of Florida; sisters: Mary Ann Walther, Betty Livingston, Dorothy Goodin and Barbara Wallenmeyer of Jefferson City; brothers: Robert Berhorst of Jefferson City, James Berhorst of New Bloomfield, and Alan Wallenmeyer of Florida; many nieces and nephews will also mourn the death of their Aunt Glo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Herbert Berhorst and Annabell Schmutzler; sister: Kathryn Rook; brother- in-laws: Adolph Walther Jr., Alan Livingston, Benjamin Goodin and Robert Rook.

The family will gather for a private service to share stories and remember the good she brought to an experience. She was loved more than she knew and will be missed by many in unimaginable ways. The world needs more loud, charismatic, and hilarious women like Gloria.

🕊️ Marcina Ann Stapleton gained her angel wings on March 11, 2026, at her home in Columbia, Mo. She was 76 years old.

Marcy had a big personality and had an impact on each person she interacted with. She was courageous, organized, inspirational, kind, loving, funny, and a spicy ball of fire that showed us what can be accomplished with determination and persistence. She lived her life to the fullest, despite her many challenges. She was fiercely independent and private.

Marcy loved her entire family, prayed for them, worried about them, rooted for them, protected them, forgave them, and always kept on loving them. Her legacy is one of unyielding kindness and generosity. Even with little to spare, Marcy continued to give to and help others. Even when sick or in pain, she never faltered in caring for her loved ones more than she did for herself. She was known for taking in someone who needed a temporary home and making them feel like a part of her family.

She was known as the Hallmark card girl --she never forgot anyone's birthday or anniversary, and never left the store without her gold seals for the back of her cards. Marcy used themed address labels, stamps, and stickers to complete her correspondence.

Speaking of titles, she held a few in her day. Marcy been a devoted daughter, a Lancer graduate of 1967, mother, Vietnamese Airlift volunteer, room mother, loving wife, an Officers Wives’ Club member, Arvin Meritor retiree, American Legion member, IBEW 1331 Union member, true and loyal friend, and a spoiling grandmother.

Marcy will be lovingly remembered by her children: Buffy Stapleton (Chris) of Columbia, MO.,, A.G. Jr. Stapleton (Tina) of Columbus, IN.; grandchildren; Stokley and Jaxsin Stapleton; brothers; Mike Sandefur (Brenda), Ronald Dean Streeval (Pam), Roger Griffith and Duane Griffith; sisters: Mona Bernard (Manfred), Vicki Burton (Malcom), Connie Medaris (Tim), Georgianna Waldrop and Sonja Streeval; goddaughter: Jordan Acton (Luke); special friends: Gayle Wooden and Roy Ervin; and many nieces and nephews.

She is joined in rest by her mother: Helen Streval; her father: Edward Griffith; honorary parents: Grace and Albert Trendleman; father of her children: A.G. Stapleton Sr.; mother-in-law: Mayme Ann Stapleton; grandmother: Nora McClean; brothers: Gene Goble and James Griffith; and sister: Carol Cooper; along with many other loved ones throughout her life.

In the end, remember, do your best, and never stop smiling. If you want to, you can look for her in the evening sunset or yellow roses, or amongst the fluttering butterflies. She will be there in one form or another. She will leave you with this; please do not cry because she’s gone; instead, be happy that she was here.

Today she is happy, and is dancing and reunited with her dear family and friends that have passed. Her memory will continue to live on and inspire strength, resilience, and generosity in those whose lives she touched.

A Celebration of Life for Marcy will take place in June 2026 at the Separate Baptist Church in Edinburgh, Ind.

Those wishing to pay their respects and celebrate her life are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please send a card to friends and let them know how much they mean to you.

🕊️ Mr. Stephen A. Ellis, who translated a youth spent on a southwest Missouri dairy farm to deep connections and influence in the Midwest livestock industry and the Alpha Gamma Rho agriculture fraternity, in which he was part of initiating more than 400 young men into its brotherhood, died March 15 in Jefferson City. He was 73.

Born in Buffalo, New York, to Mary Edmondson and William Ellis, Stephen moved by train to Springfield, Mo., at age 11 in 1963. Three years later, in 1966, his mother married Dale Freeman Edmondson, a 1948 Alpha Gamma Rho initiate. The family dairy farm provided lessons in work ethic that would later help define his life.
But another agriculture experience, the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity's Theta Chapter at the University of Missouri, left an even deeper mark.

In 1970, Ellis enrolled at the University of Missouri, where he studied animal science and dairy husbandry. He graduated in 1974 with a B.S. in Agriculture.
In 1971, he was initiated into AGR’s Theta Chapter. While he valued the organization’s traditions, he always emphasized that “college gave me the letters; the real legacy was the brotherhood that stretched far beyond the campus.” He treated every AGR member—from wide-eyed freshmen to graying alumni—as a brother, a principle that guided both his personal loyalties and his professional conduct.

After graduation, Ellis entered agribusiness, first with MFA Incorporated and later with IMC/Pitman-Moore, where he sold animal-health products across the Midwest. Colleagues remembered him as a straight-talking, tireless salesman who preferred meeting producers on the farm over polished office presentations. In the early 1990s, he made twelve trips into the former Soviet Union, with far-flung posts from Belarus to Kazakhstan and Siberia introducing animal health products to former collective farms unaccustomed to livestock technology in use in western markets. Those journeys, undertaken amid post-Soviet uncertainty, reinforced his conviction that lasting progress depended on relationships, not salesmanship. Ellis’s belief in the foundational power of relationships drew him back to the University of Missouri year after year to offer of support and camaraderie. In 2012, Ellis was inducted into the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Alumni Leadership Society in recognition of his exceptional service and leadership. And, even during the years of traveling for his sales position, Ellis found ways to be a proud Tiger. He attended every home MU Football game from September 1970 through November 2019, some 49 years of purposeful homecoming with commutes from as far away as Chicago, London, Moscow, and Novosibirsk, Siberia—where a trip to the game meant leaving Novosibirsk on a Wednesday for a Saturday game and returning to work in Siberia by the next Wednesday.

Ellis’s greatest impact was through Alpha Gamma Rho. He helped initiate over 400 young men, sharing the fraternity's agricultural and brotherhood values. He served on the Theta Chapter alumni board, advised the Kappa Chapter, and was Director Emeritus on the Theta Alumni Association board. He raised funds for house construction and renovations, attended nine national AGR conventions, and was selected for the Coleman Club, the Theta Chapter Hall of Fame.

In every role, he stressed that the fraternity’s true worth lay not in titles or rank but in the enduring network of mutual support that links generations of brothers. Ellis spent his later life in the Columbia, Mo., area, where he remained a fixture at University of Missouri football games and stayed active in local agricultural circles.

Steve Ellis’s legacy is the many personal connections he built—on farms, at farm shows and meetings, and in chapter houses. Through his connections, he always strove to help Alpha Gamma Rho build better men.
To the young men he helped develop through Alpha Gamma Rho and the colleagues who relied on him, his life proved that real impact comes from duty and relationships.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Edmondson, and his father, William Ellis. Survived by sisters, Mary Jones, Becky Daniel (Lon), brother, Dan Ellis (Nancy). Nephews, Christopher Hardy, Nathan Ellis, and Rick Prevedel. Nieces, Beth Nail, Andra Foutch, Stephanie Hotard. Stepfather, Dale Edmondson (Pat).

Memorial donations can be directed to the Theta Chapter Building Association Building Fund at 602 South College Avenue, Columbia, MO, 65201.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for June 6, 2026, at the Theta Chapter House in Columbia.

🕊️ Mr. James “Jim” E. Madden, 63 , Versailles, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2026 at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born January 13, 1963 in Kansas City, KS., a son of the late James E. and Betty (Dawson) Madden. On May 23, 1998 he was united in marriage to Angela Stark who survives at their home.

Jim was known for his sharp intellect and quick wit. A natural jokester, always introducing himself as Jim, G-E-M. He enjoyed making others laugh and never passed up the opportunity for a sarcastic remark.

Much of his life was devoted to his faith and church community. He spent many years involved in local churches, often leading worship, feeding the homeless or guiding Bible studies, sharing his love of scripture, fellowship and worship with others.

Throughout his life, Jim worked in many roles that brought his life purpose and fulfillment. He was a master plumber, spent time remodeling homes, and later became a certified nursing assistant together with his wife. Unfortunately, later in life he became disabled due to chronic health issues and was unable to work.

Even when he could no longer work physically, his mind remained active. He’d typically be up in the early morning, coffee in hand, reading a book or studying whatever topic had captured his interest from the Bible to History and just about anything in between. He always had a deep curiosity for learning. Thoughtful conversations were some of his greatest enjoyments, and those who knew him appreciated his engaging mind and the lively discussions he inspired.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years: Angela; son: Jesse; daughter: Clarissa and her spouse Taylor; granddaughter: Arianan; and three sisters.

He was preceded in death by many loved ones and friends.

Per Jim’s wishes there will be no formal services.

Arrangements for Mr. Madden are under the direction of TYLER M. WOODS FUNERAL DIRECTOR, 611 E. Capitol Ave. Jefferson City, Missouri 65101. (573) 636-2424. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.WoodsMemorialServices.com
