Over time, the unhealthy use of drugs or alcohol can cause changes in your brain that lead to an overwhelming desire to continue or increase your use of the substances—even when this usage threatens your life, harms your physical and mental health, ravages your relationships, or impairs your ability to work. These changes in the brain are part of what constitutes substance use disorder. To learn more visit https://www.mentalhealth.va.gov/substance-use/index.asp

Missouri Buddy Check 22 Day
This month’s topic: Self-Care

Self-care is what we do to improve and maintain our physical, mental, and emotional health. Here are a few examples:
•Physical health. Eat healthy, drink water, a good sleep routine, and daily physical activity.
•Mental health. Reading, journaling, taking breaks from social media, and meditation.
•Emotional health. Journaling, talking with someone when distressed or lonely, and engage in a hobby.

If we can take care of our overall health, it will protect us from emotional distress and allow us to be there for others when they need us.

Make sure to reach out today and check in on a service member, veteran, or military family.
