"During my last year of undergraduate studies, I wasn’t convinced medical school was the right fit for me. I’d spent the last 2 years working with AmeriCorps, and I loved the work I was doing with at-risk youth, but we were entering the pandemic, and I didn’t feel familiar enough with the medical system to take the leap.

I was raised in a rural Missouri community to a working-class family, I was the first to go to college, and I didn’t see a place for me in medical school. My AmeriCorps supervisor encouraged to consider social work. So, I got my master’s and completed an internship at a nonprofit cancer support center. I was there for 3 years, and saw the people, the real humans, in between their experiences as patients.

Alongside fellow social workers in individual therapy and support groups, I fell in love with mental health care. My place in medicine finally made sense to me. I am now in my last year of medical school applying to residency.

I spend my time advocating for more first-generation physicians, rotating through rural communities like my hometown, and learning how to provide health care authentically as myself, as a social worker turned medical student."
