🦷 What’s That Wednesday? — X-Rays
Why do we take X-rays at your checkup?
X-rays let us see what our eyes can’t — tiny cavities, hidden infections, or bone changes beneath the surface.
✨ Translation: It’s like getting a behind-the-scenes look at your smile to catch problems early (before they cause pain or cost you money!).

What's That? Wednesday" – Week 2: Root Canal

😬 What’s a Root Canal?

Sounds scary, but it’s actually a tooth-saver!
If the inside of your tooth (called the pulp) gets infected or inflamed, a root canal removes the bad stuff, cleans it out, and seals it up. You keep your natural tooth—just without the pain!

Root Canal Myths vs. Facts: Let's clear up some common misconceptions
Myth: Root canals are extremely painful. Fact: Modern dental technology and anesthesia make root canals no more painful than a routine filling. Source: American Association of Endodontists.
Myth: Root canals cause illness. Fact: Comprehensive studies and research have debunked the myth that root canal treatment causes illness. On the contrary, root canals eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal system, preventing reinfection and helping to save the natural tooth. Source: Journal of the American Dental Association.
Myth: It’s better to pull a tooth than have a root canal. Fact: Root canal treatment is preferred because it saves the natural tooth, which is important for maintaining proper chewing function and jawbone integrity. Tooth extraction can lead to other complications, such as misalignment of the remaining teeth and potential cosmetic issues. Source: American Dental Association.

What’s That Wednesday? 🦷 -Why does a toothache hurt so badly?

It’s easy to think it’s “just a bad tooth,” but the pain runs much deeper. Every tooth is wired with tiny nerve endings that connect straight into the trigeminal nerve — one of the strongest, most sensitive pain pathways in the entire body. Once triggered, it shoots signals to the brain in milliseconds, turning tooth pain into an alarm you simply can’t ignore.

That’s why a toothache can feel:
• Sharp and stabbing.
• Radiating into the jaw, head, or ear.
• Strong enough to disrupt sleep, focus, and even mood.

Tooth pain isn’t random. It’s a survival signal — warning of hidden trouble like cavities, abscesses, or inflammation. What makes it worse is that the brain often struggles to pinpoint the exact source, so the ache spreads across the face, creating the illusion that “everything hurts.”

So if a toothache ever sidelines you, know this: it’s not an overreaction — it’s your nervous system on high alert, trying to protect you.

🪥 **What’s That Wednesday?!** 🪥
**Today’s Topic: Dental Cleanings**
(aka: *“Why do I need to come in every 6 months?”*)

You brush. You floss (most of the time 😅). So why do we still want to see you twice a year?

Here’s the deal:
Even with great home care, plaque (that sticky stuff made of bacteria) can harden into **tartar** — and once it does, your toothbrush can’t touch it. That’s where we come in!

✨ **A dental cleaning includes:**
✅ Removing plaque & tartar
✅ Polishing your teeth for that squeaky-clean feeling
✅ Checking your gums to catch early signs of problems
✅ Giving your smile a little extra love 💙

And no — it doesn’t hurt. In fact, most people leave feeling *super* fresh and wondering why they waited so long. 😁

So if it’s been a while since your last cleaning, consider this your sign to call us! 📞

“What's That? Wednesday" – Scaling & Root Planing

🧽 What’s Scaling and Root Planing?

If your gums are inflamed or bleeding, this deep-cleaning treatment helps! Our skilled dental hygienists perfom this procedure for you!
Scaling removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline. Root planing smooths the roots so gums can reattach and heal. This treament is usually done under local anesthesia and is in conjunction with treatments for periodontal or gum disease.

It’s like a spa day for your gums—restoring health and treating gum disease. 🧖‍♀️🦷

📅 "What's That? Wednesday" – Dental Sealants

🛡️ What’s a Sealant?

Sealants are like raincoats for your teeth!
They’re thin, protective coatings we paint onto the grooves of your back teeth (molars) to keep out food and bacteria that cause cavities. In our area, there is a great program through the Health Department that provide these to children in our schools! Quick, painless, and super effective.

📅 "What's That? Wednesday"- Dental Fillings

🦷 What’s a Filling?

Got a cavity? A filling is how we fix it!
When a tooth gets a small hole from decay, we clean out the damaged part and “fill” it with a safe material—like tooth-colored resin or silver amalgam—to seal it up and stop the cavity from growing. At our office, we use composite resin, a tooth colored material to fill your teeth!

Think of it like patching a pothole in the road—only way smaller and way more important for your smile! 😁
