In child and teen therapy, safety and connection come first.
Before we jump into coping skills, behavior change, or processing big feelings, we focus on building trust and rapport. Kids and teens open up when they feel safe, understood, and not judged.
Sometimes that means playing games, talking about favorite shows, or just getting to know each other. It may not look like “deep therapy” at first—but this connection is what makes the real work possible.
When young people feel safe in the relationship, they’re much more willing to share, explore hard feelings, and try new ways of coping.
Rapport isn’t extra—it’s the foundation. 🪴
