Glaucoma — you always hear about it when it comes to eye health, but what is it?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, the part of the eye that transmits light to the brain. When the optic nerve is damaged, vision is directly impacted, and can even be lost completely.

Our eyes have a drainage system that regulates the aqueous humor, or the fluid in our eye that regulates our eye pressure and provides nutrients to the front of the eye. When this drainage system starts working improperly, it can cause the pressure in our eyes to build up, causing damage to the most important parts of our visual processing system.

Think you’ll notice when this happens? Think again! In most cases, glaucoma is painless, and you may not even notice any changes to your vision at first! This is why it’s so important to stay up to date on your annual eye exam. Our doctors will measure your eye pressure and take a look at the inside of the eye to make sure every part of the eye is working as it should.

The most important part of your exam is the slit lamp examination!

Using a microscope, the doctor examines not only the surface of your eye, but the back of your eye as well. This allows the doctor a complete look at the health of your retina, which can even allow them to spot the early signs of disease (such as hypertension or diabetes) before you notice any symptoms!
