✨April is Autism Awareness Month.

✨Speech therapy is an essential component of treatment for children with Autism, as many children with Autism have difficulty with communication skills.

✨Speech-language pathologists can help children with Autism improve their communication skills, including speech, language, social communication, and nonverbal communication.

✨Speech-language pathologists use a variety of techniques and strategies to help children with Autism develop their communication skills, such as visual aids, social stories, play-based activities, and parent coaching. Speech therapy can also help children with Autism improve their academic and social success by improving their communication skills.

✨Autism Awareness Month provides an opportunity to promote awareness of the importance of speech therapy for children with Autism and to advocate for access to quality speech therapy services for all children with Autism.

📚A year ago on this day, Dr. Yaacov Anziska, neurologist, invited me to present at the MDA Clinical & Scientific Conference 2022. The goal of this presentation was to discuss ways clinicians, physicians, and healthcare professionals can collaborate to build teams to help patients diagnosed with NMD. My goal was to educate other professionals about the role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in helping patients with NMD.

📚 Some challenges NMD patients face include swallowing and communication disorders. While working with Dr. Anziska at the NMD clinic at our home base, we were able to help patients who had difficulty with eating/ drinking and those who had communication difficulties. I was able to provide families/ caregivers recommendations of alternative ways of preparing foods/ liquids so their loved one can enjoy a good meal. I was able to help patients who were unable to communicate verbally, but understood everything, have a voice with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

📚 Collaboration with patients, family members, and healthcare professionals allows clients to be successful to reach their goals in speech, language, swallowing, and cognition. Progress for patients can happen.

📚At Your Journey Speech & Language Therapy, our focus is a collaborative effort with clients and loved ones. We work as a TEAM. We work towards progression and achievements.

🧠 March is Brain Injury Awareness Month.

🧠 Brain injury awareness is crucial in promoting early detection and management of individuals who have suffered from brain injuries. Brain injuries can result from a variety of causes, including traumatic brain injuries (TBI), stroke, tumors, infections, degenerative diseases, and contact sports (e.g., football, wrestling, soccer, and hockey). The effects of brain injuries can range from mild to severe, and can impact a person's cognitive, physical, and communication abilities.

🧠 SLPs play an important role in the rehabilitation of individuals who have suffered from brain injuries. They may work with patients who have difficulty with language expression and comprehension, speech production, voice, fluency, or swallowing. SLPs use a variety of techniques and interventions to help patients improve their communication skills, such as exercises to strengthen the muscles involved in speech and swallowing, cognitive therapy to improve memory and attention, and training to use assistive technology devices to aid communication.

🧠 In addition to providing direct services to patients, SLPs also work closely with families, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals to provide education and support. They may provide strategies for improving communication in daily life and help develop communication goals that are tailored to the individual's needs and abilities.

🧠 Overall, brain injury awareness and speech-language pathology are important aspects of the healthcare system that promote early detection and effective treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. By working together, healthcare professionals can help individuals who have suffered from brain injuries achieve their full potential and improve their quality of life.

🗣Dysarthria is a condition in which you have difficulty saying words. A person with dysarthria may have a nerve, brain, or muscle damage that makes it difficult to use or control the muscles of the mouth, tongue, larynx, or vocal cords. The muscles may be weak or completely paralyzed or poor muscle coordination. A person with dysarthria may have difficulty with respiration (breathing), phonation (voicing), articulation (speech), prosody (patterns of stress and intonation) and resonance (e.g., nasality).

🗣Speech-Language Pathologists work closely with clients to help them communicate more clearly. We teach techniques and strategies to help clients in their communication.

🗣Speech-To-Speech (STS) is a form of Relay Services that provides Communications Assistants (CAs) for people with speech disabilities who have difficulty being understood on the phone. STS CAs are trained individuals familiar with many different speech patterns and language recognition skills. The CA makes the call and repeats the words exactly. Individuals using STS include those with Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s disease, a Laryngectomy, ALS, Stuttering, Muscular Dystrophy, Stroke, and other conditions affecting clarity of speech. Call the number in your state and ask the CA to dial the number you wish to call.

💜 Early Intervention refers to a set of services and support provided to children with developmental delays or disabilities and their families during the critical early years of life. The goal of early intervention is to enhance the child's development, improve the child's ability to learn and function, and promote the family's capacity to support the child's growth and development. This typically includes support for the child's physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development and may involve services such as speech and language therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

💜 Speech-language pathologists are part of the team that supports children in their growth in their naturalistic environments through routines, authentic experiences, and active exploration. We work with families to provide maximum support in the child’s environment, which may include their home, child care location, classroom setting, or any other settings the child may participate in.

💜 At Your Journey Speech & Language Therapy, we focus highly on a collaborative approach to provide the best possible outcomes for your child. Let us be a part of Your Journey!

🔹 Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to the brain, usually from a stroke or head injury, that affects a person's ability to speak, understand, read, and write language. Speech-Language Pathologists evaluate and treat patients with aphasia to support clients in their communication with their loved ones. Therapy is individualized and created to be functional for a client’s everyday life. We support and create action plans that incorporate communication pertinent to a client’s life. Caregiver training plays a big role in supporting clients with aphasia. Speech-language pathologists encourage caregivers to be a part of therapy sessions to learn techniques to facilitate communication with their loved ones.

🔹 Support groups are available for clients and caregivers. Check out: www.aphasia.org to find out more!

🔹 We look forward to being a part of Your Journey!

🙌 SLP’s complete a rigorous academic program from an accredited institution. Coursework will include a minimum of 36 credits at the graduate level, 400 clock hours of supervised clinical experience, and skills and knowledge in the following areas:

1) speech sound production, to encompass articulation, motor planning & ex*****on, phonology, & accent modification
2) fluency & fluency disorders
3) voice & resonance, including respiration & phonation
4) receptive & expressive language to include phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics (language use and social aspects of communication), prelinguistic & paralinguistic communication, and literacy in speaking, listening, reading, and writing
5) hearing, including the impact on speech and language
6) swallowing/feeding, including structure and function of oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal, pulmonary, esophageal, gastrointestinal, and related functions across the life span
7) cognitive aspects of communication: attention, memory, sequencing, problem solving, & executive functioning
8) social aspects of communication, including ineffective social skills, lack of communication opportunities, and augmentative and alternative communication modalities.

🙌 After graduation, SLPs pass a board exam, the Praxis, and complete a clinical fellowship year (CFY), which is a minimum of 1,260 hours, under a certified Speech-Language Pathologist. After the CFY is completed, SLP’s apply for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC’s) and can practice independently.
