Women’s History Month: Lucy Hobbs Taylor

Lucy Hobbs Taylor was a trailblazer who paved the way for women in dentistry. She was refused admission to medical school, and then dental school, because of her gender. Ms. Taylor eventually learned dentistry as an apprentice.

She was later accepted and then graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery. In 1866, she became the first woman licensed to practice dentistry in the United States.

Oral Cancer Awareness Month is April, and Dr. Haig Rickerby will be offering free oral cancer screenings on April 26th. Did you know that approximately one person each hour of every day dies from oral cancer and more than 37,000 people are diagnosed each year in the United States?

Unfortunately oral cancer is not a rare disease but the great news is that it can often be found early in its development through a simple, painless, and quick screening. Dr. Rickerby and his dental team are looking forward to being able to offer those that attend our event the highest quality of care with regards to oral cancer screening. On April 26th, four hours have been set aside to see individuals who need screenings.

It is not necessary that you have been a previous patient in our practice; this event is open to the public. But because the number of screening time slots is limited you must register with us early to ensure that a spot is available.

When is it time for a root canal? The most basic symptoms are –

- Extreme toothache pain when chewing and upon application of pressure.

- Extended sensitivity/pain to heat and cold temperatures (after heat/cold has been removed from the tooth area).

- Discoloration (darkening of the surface) of the tooth area.

- Swelling and tenderness of in the nearby gums.

- A persistent and reoccurring pimple on the gums.

- Sometimes there may not be any symptoms of pain.

If you have experienced any of the above symptoms, its time to take charge and contact your dentist! A root canal treatment is necessary to repair and help save a tooth that has become badly decayed and/or become infected.

A great dental exam may also include an examination for oral cancer with the goal to identify cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure.

The dentist looks over the inside of your mouth to check for red or white patches or mouth sores and will also feel the tissues in your mouth for lumps or other abnormalities. In addition to this process we can use special dyes or special light to assist in the identification of abnormal cells
