During Gambling Awareness Month, it’s important to talk about the connection between substance use and gambling. Research shows that individuals struggling with gambling are at higher risk for substance use — and vice versa. Both can impact the brain’s reward system, decision-making, and impulse control.

According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, many people experiencing problem gambling also face challenges with alcohol or other substances. When these issues overlap, the risks can increase — financially, emotionally, and physically.

The good news? Recovery is possible. Treatment and peer support can address both challenges together, reducing stigma and increasing hope.
