Kids, the Vagus Nerve, and Why Regulation Matters

When we think about kids struggling with things like:
-Social interaction
- Communication
-Emotional regulation
- Focus
- Daily routines...we often look at behavior first.
But sometimes the bigger story is happening in the nervous system.
Meet the Vagus Nerve
The vagus nerve is one of the most important nerves in the body.
It connects the brain to many major systems including the:
- Heart
- Lungs
- Digestive system
- Facial muscles
- Voice box
- Emotional regulation centers
It plays a huge role in helping kids shift into a “safe and calm” state.
This state is what allows children to:
- Make eye contact
- Communicate clearly
- Learn and process information
- Regulate emotions
- Engage socially
- Develop daily living skills
When the nervous system is regulated, these abilities become easier.
When the Nervous System Is Stuck in Stress Mode
If a child’s system is stuck in a constant fight-or-flight response, you may see:
- Difficulty focusing
- Sensory sensitivity
- Emotional outbursts
- Trouble with communication
- Social withdrawal
- Digestive issues
• Poor sleep
This isn’t simply behavior.
It can be a regulation issue.
Where Inspired Living comes in...
Chiropractic care focuses on the spine and nervous system.
The upper cervical spine and brainstem area are closely connected to the vagus nerve and autonomic nervous system.
Gentle chiropractic adjustments may help support:
-Better nervous system balance
- Improved vagal tone
- Reduced stress responses
- Improved brain-body communication
When the system is calmer and more regulated, many families notice improvements in:
- Social engagement
- Communication attempts
- Emotional stability
- Sleep patterns
• Daily functioning
The Big Picture
Kids don’t struggle because they want to.
Often their nervous system is simply working too hard to stay in survival mode.
When we support regulation first, skills often follow.
Sometimes the key isn’t pushing harder…
-
It’s helping the nervous system feel safe enough to grow and live Inspired;)

How Does a Baby Get Acid Reflux?
Think about that for a moment.
A newborn hasn’t eaten fast food.
They’re not stressed about work.
They don’t drink coffee.
They don’t stay up scrolling their phone.
So how does a tiny human develop acid reflux?
Most explanations focus on the stomach.
But the stomach doesn’t work by itself.
It works through the nervous system.
The Brain–Gut Connection
The digestive system is heavily controlled by a nerve called the vagus nerve.
This nerve travels from the brainstem down to the stomach and intestines and helps regulate:
- Swallowing
- Stomach acid production
- Movement of food through the stomach
- Opening and closing of the esophageal sphincter
That tiny valve that keeps stomach contents from coming back up?
It’s controlled by nervous system signals.
Now Think About Birth
Birth is incredible.
But it’s also physically intense.
During delivery, babies experience pressure, twisting, and compression through the head and upper neck.... the exact area where the brainstem and vagus nerve exit the skull.
Most babies adapt beautifully.
But sometimes tension or irritation in that area can affect how the nervous system communicates with the digestive system.
And when communication is off…
-The stomach may empty slower
- The valve at the top of the stomach may not close well
- Pressure can build in the digestive tract
Which can look like:
- Spitting up frequently
- Arching during feeds
- Fussiness after eating
- Poor sleep after feeding
-
A Different Way to Think About It
Reflux isn’t always just a stomach problem.
-
Sometimes it’s a communication problem.
-
When the nervous system regulating digestion is stressed or irritated, the digestive system can struggle to coordinate properly.
-
Why This Matters
-
Babies are incredibly adaptable.
Their nervous systems are still developing and organizing in the first year of life.
-
Supporting regulation early... through things like positioning, feeding strategies, and gentle nervous system support... can sometimes make a big difference.
-
Because sometimes the question isn’t:
Why is my baby’s stomach upset?
Sometimes the deeper question is:
How well is the nervous system coordinating digestion?

And that’s a very different conversation.
One focuses on the Cause and the other focuses on the Effect.

Office Update
Just a quick heads up…

Our office will be closed from today (3.11) until Monday (3.16)

Why?
Well… as responsible healthcare professionals, it’s extremely important that we periodically check in on our satellite clinic near the beach.
You know… make sure the sand is still soft.
Confirm the ocean is still salty.
Evaluate the hydration levels of the tropical beverages.
And ensure that Jimmy Buffett's music is playing at just the right volume.
It’s all very scientific.
Don’t worry.... we’ll return Monday fully refreshed, properly “researched,” and ready to take care of all of you again.
Until then:
- Move your body
- Drink your water
- Try not to wrestle any sharks
See you Monday!

What If Your Body Could Repair the Injury… Instead of Just Numbing It?

When people develop chronic tendon, ligament, or joint pain, the usual options look like this:
- Cortisone shots to reduce inflammation
- Medication to manage pain
- Surgery if things get worse
- Or just “live with it”
But what if the goal wasn’t masking the pain…
What if the goal was stimulating the body to repair the tissue?
That’s where SoftWave Tissue Regeneration Therapy comes in.
SoftWave is a form of focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) that delivers acoustic waves into injured tissue. These waves create a mechanical stimulus that can activate healing responses in the body.
Research has shown SoftWave therapy can:
-Stimulate angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation)
- Increase growth factor expression involved in tissue repair
- Activate stem cell recruitment to injured areas
- Improve tendon and ligament healing
Studies supporting this include:
• Wang et al., 2003 – Journal of Orthopaedic Research
Demonstrated SoftWave therapy stimulates neovascularization and tissue regeneration in tendons.
• Notarnicola & Moretti, 2012 – Muscles, Ligaments and Tendons Journal
Found SoftWave to be effective for chronic tendinopathies.
• Speed, 2014 – British Medical Bulletin
Reported SoftWave as an effective treatment option for conditions like plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and calcific tendinitis.
• D’Agostino et al., 2015 – Stem Cell Research & Therapy
Demonstrated SoftWave therapy can stimulate stem cell activity and tissue repair mechanisms.
In other words:
Shockwave therapy isn’t just treating symptoms.
It’s triggering biologic repair pathways.
In Plain English
Most treatments say:
“Let’s make the pain quieter.”
SoftWave asks:
“How do we wake up the healing process?”
Instead of numbing tissue, the acoustic waves stimulate the body to:
- Increase blood flow
- Recruit healing cells
- Break up scar tissue
- Restart stalled healing processes
Why This Matters
Many chronic injuries aren’t truly “damaged forever.”
They’re stuck in a failed healing cycle.
The body tried to repair…
But the process stalled.
SoftWave acts like a reset signal.
A message to the body saying:
“Hey… this area still needs attention.”
The Bigger Question
If the body is designed to heal…
Should the goal always be suppressing symptoms?
Or should we be asking how to reactivate healing?
That’s the conversation regenerative therapies are changing.
And SoftWave is opening doors that once only led to injections or surgery.
Give us a call and find out if SoftWave may be right for you.

Your Body Is Basically a Houseplant With Opinions.
Stay with me here.
You know how a plant starts looking sad, droopy, and slightly dramatic when you forget to water it?
Leaves limp.
Color fades.
Everything just… looks tired.
Then you water it and suddenly it perks back up and looks healthier?
That plant is you.
Your body is about 60% water.
Your brain? About 75%.
Water helps:
- Circulate nutrients
-Regulate body temperature
- Cushion joints
- Support digestion
- Flush waste
- Maintain blood pressure
• Keep your brain thinking clearly
Basically… it runs the entire system.
But here’s what we do instead:

- Coffee
- Soda
- Energy drinks
- Wine
…and maybe a sip of water somewhere around Tuesday.
Then we wonder why we feel:
- Foggy
- Tired
- Headachy
- Stiff
- Irritable
Meanwhile your body is quietly saying:
“Hey… maybe we should try the thing we’re mostly made of?”
Imagine putting orange juice in your car’s gas tank.
That’s basically what dehydration feels like for your body.
You might still move…
But things won’t run smoothly.
Here’s the wild part:.
Many people who think they’re hungry, tired, or cranky…
-Are just under-watered humans walking around like dried-out houseplants.
So before your next coffee, snack, or stress spiral…
Drink some water.
Your joints will thank you.
Your brain will thank you.
Your mood might even apologize to the people around you.
Hydration is not fancy.
It’s just foundational.
And sometimes the most powerful health habit is also the simplest one.

BREAKING NEWS FROM THE INSPIRED HQ …
There are only TWO adjusting shifts left before D & D pack up the adjusting tables, sunscreen, and suspiciously large sunglasses and head out to the Inspired Living Beach Clinic this Wednesday.
Yes…you read that correctly...the ILC HQ-BC.
Where the ocean breeze is strong…
The sand is warm…
And the seagulls are rumored to be fully subluxation-free.

Meanwhile back here at the office today, the adjusting schedule is starting to look like the last lifeboat leaving the Titanic.
People are scrambling.
Phones are ringing.
Someone may or may not have tried to bribe Diann with baked goods for a last-minute spot.
Why the rush?
Because nobody wants to be the person who wakes up Wednesday thru Sunday thinking:

“Man… I should have gotten adjusted before DrB headed out."
So if your nerve system has been creating havoc to your body via:
- Sniffles, snot and such
- A spine loaded with noises like a bowl of Rice Krispies
- A body tighter than a jar lid your spouse had to open
- or a neck whispering “please… help me…” every time you get out of the car.
This is your moment.
Two shifts--today 3-6 and tomorrow 3-6.
That’s it.
After that, the adjustments happening this week will mostly involve D&D adjusting their beach chairs and sunscreen levels.
Call Diann and grab one of the remaining spots.
Your nervous system will thank you.
And if you wait too long…

You might just have to book an appointment at the Inspired Beach Clinic;)

Wellness Chiropractic vs. Only When It Hurts

Most people use chiropractic the same way they use pain medicine:
Something hurts → get adjusted → feel better → disappear until the next flare-up.
But that’s symptomatic care, not wellness care.
Research suggests the body responds very differently when care is consistent rather than reactive.
What the Research Shows
Studies talking of chiropractic care have found:
-Improved joint mobility and neuromuscular coordination following spinal adjustments (Haavik & Murphy, Journal of Neural Plasticity, 2012).
- Adjustments can influence sensorimotor integration and brain processing, suggesting chiropractic affects how the brain receives and interprets body signals.
- Research has shown measurable changes in autonomic nervous system activity, which helps regulate stress response, heart rate, and immune function.
-Patients receiving maintenance chiropractic care have been shown in some studies to experience fewer pain recurrences and improved long-term function compared to episodic care only (Senna & Machaly, Spine Journal, 2011).
In other words:
Chiropractic isn’t only affecting joints.
It influences how the nervous system coordinates the body.
Now in Plain English
Waiting until something hurts is like:
-Only brushing your teeth when you have a cavity
- Only exercising after heart disease
- Only changing your oil when the engine fails
By the time symptoms show up, your body has often been compensating for a long time.
Pain is usually the last alarm, not the first sign of dysfunction.
--->Wellness Care Works Differently
Instead of asking:
“Can you fix this pain?”
Wellness chiropractic asks:
“How do we keep the system working well so problems show up less often?”
Over time, consistent care often leads to:
- Fewer if any flare-ups
- Better mobility
- Improved posture
- Faster recovery from stress or activity
- A nervous system that adapts better to life
Symptomatic care is reactive.
Wellness care is protective.
One waits for breakdown.
The other works to prevent it.
And the people who tend to feel the best long term?
They don’t wait for the alarm.
They maintain the system with a hint of Inspiration;)

Summer Is Magical… Unless You’re Exhausted.

Let’s be honest, moms.
Summer looks dreamy on Instagram.
-Pool days.
-Park dates.
-Vacations.
-Late sunsets.
-Kids running wild and free.
But in real life?
It’s:
-Hot.
- Busy.
- Snack requests every 12 minutes.
- Constant driving.
- And somehow… still no rest.
And if you’re already running on fumes?
Summer doesn’t feel magical.
It feels overwhelming.
Here’s the truth no one says out loud:
Summer rewards the moms who prepared in the spring.
Not with six-packs.
-With stamina.
-With patience.
-With energy.
-With a back that doesn’t scream after one beach day.
-With the ability to say “yes” without secretly thinking,
“I’m too tired.”
Preparation doesn’t mean perfection.
It means:
- Walking now so you’re not winded later
- Lifting now so you’re strong all summer
- Hydrating now so your energy stays steady
- Sleeping now like it actually matters
- Taking care of your spine before lugging coolers and toddlers around
Summer doesn’t suck.
It just exposes whether you’ve been caring for yourself…
or only caring for everyone else.
And this isn’t about swimsuit season.
It’s about survival season.
You deserve to enjoy the memories you’re creating.
Not just endure them.
There’s still time.
Strong and Inspired;) moms make summer better.

We get this question on occasion...
“What Should I Feel After Getting Adjusted for a While?”
This is a great question.
And the honest answer might surprise you.
Sometimes?
Nothing dramatic.
-No fireworks.
-No lightning bolts.
-No instant superhero transformation.
Because chiropractic isn’t about chasing feelings.
It’s about improving function.
We’ve been conditioned to measure health by symptoms.
-“No pain? I’m good.”
-“Headache gone? Fixed.”
But your nervous system doesn’t work based on how you feel.
It works based on how well it communicates.
And communication isn’t always loud.
After consistent care, you might notice:
- Fewer flare-ups
- Better sleep
- More energy
- Improved recovery
- Less tension
- Better posture
- Calmer stress response
Or you may just realize…
Things that used to bother you don’t anymore.
And sometimes, the biggest sign of progress is this:
-Nothing is screaming for attention.
Think of it like maintaining your car.
If it’s running smoothly, you don’t “feel” the oil change.
But you’d definitely feel it if you skipped it long enough.
Chiropractic isn’t about feeling high.
It’s about functioning well.
And functioning well often feels… normal.
And normal... without constant breakdown... is actually extraordinary.
If you’re waiting for fireworks, you might miss the quiet power of regulation.
Better communication.
Better adaptability.
Better resilience.
That’s the goal.
Not a feeling.
Inspired;) Function.

It’s Just a Late Night… Right?
One late bedtime doesn’t seem like a big deal.
But when late nights become normal…
something shifts.
Kids don’t just “sleep.”
-They grow in their sleep.
-They regulate in their sleep.
-They heal in their sleep.
-They wire their brains in their sleep.
Growth hormone surges at night.
Memory consolidates.
The immune system recalibrates.
The nervous system resets.
Sleep isn’t downtime.
It’s construction time.
When bedtimes constantly move around:
- Mood becomes unpredictable
- Focus declines
- Immune resilience drops
- Anxiety increases
- Meltdowns multiply
And we label it behavior.
But often… it’s biology.
Kids thrive on rhythm.
Their nervous systems crave predictability.
A consistent bedtime isn’t about control.
It’s about safety.
It tells their brain:
You’re safe. It’s time to restore.
You don’t notice great sleep immediately.
But you always notice poor sleep eventually.
The earlier bedtime battle may feel exhausting.
But the long-term payoff?
-Calmer mornings.
-Stronger immunity.
-Better focus.
-More regulated emotions.
Sleep is not optional maintenance.
It’s foundational health.
Protect it like you protect their nutrition.
Because a well-rested child is a regulated child.
And that changes everything.

A statement that we have heard from some women...
If I Lift Weights… Will I Get Bulky?

Ah yes.
The ancient fear.
You pick up a dumbbell and suddenly wake up looking like a Marvel superhero.
Relax...that’s not how this works.
Getting “bulky” takes:
-Years of intentional heavy training
- Progressive overload
- Strategic eating
- Often a calorie surplus
- And in many cases… elite genetics
You don’t accidentally trip over a pair of 15 pound weights and grow biceps overnight.
That’s like saying:
I touched a basketball once… will I join the NBA.
Here’s what actually happens when most people lift weights:
- You get stronger
- You boost metabolism
- You improve bone density
- You tighten muscle tone
- You reduce injury risk
- You improve posture
- You feel more confident
Muscle doesn’t make you bulky.
Excess body fat and no muscle tone does.
And strength training is one of the best ways to improve body composition.
Also…if building noticeable muscle were easy…
Every person in the gym would look like a bodybuilder.
They don’t.
Because it’s HARD.
The real risk of lifting weights?
You’ll feel powerful.
You’ll carry groceries in one trip.
You’ll open jars without assistance.
You’ll age with resilience.
Terrifying, I know.
So no.
You won’t “accidentally get bulky.”
But you might accidentally get strong.
And that’s a trade worth making when you are living Inspired;)
See you soon for some Inspiration;)
