Celebrating Clinical Success : Irene Jessee
We are delighted to share this month's success story, featuring Irene Jessee, a former resident who achieved a remarkable recovery at Abundant Christian Living Community. Ms. Jessee came to us after a challenging hospital stay due to pneumonia, sepsis, acute respiratory failure with hypoxia, and leukemia, requiring supplemental oxygen at 3 liters via nasal cannula.
Initially, Ms. Jessee anticipated a transition to long-term care. However, through her dedication and the comprehensive physical, occupational, and respiratory therapy she received, she made exceptional progress. Our Team worked closely with her daily, monitoring her SpO2 levels and strengthening her lungs with incentive spirometry. The Respiratory Therapy Team also collaborated with Rehabilitation to incorporate deep breathing exercises during her sessions.
Ms. Jessee's strength improved steadily, allowing her to transition from continuous to intermittent oxygen. Despite initially needing oxygen only during exertion and at night, her strong desire to return home without any supplemental oxygen motivated us to continue working towards weaning her off it entirely. Her determination paid off, and she eventually maintained healthy SpO2 levels even during exertion, no longer requiring oxygen.
Thrilled to regain her independence, Ms. Jessee was able to walk with a walker and was free of oxygen tubing. She expressed immense satisfaction with her skilled nursing stay at Abundant Christian Living Community, stating she was "so glad she came here" and that it was "the best place to choose after leaving the hospital," with "zero complaints about her recovery." She was overjoyed to return home, a possibility she had doubted, and to once again enjoy the outdoors and the freedom of movement.
Ms. Jessee now manages independently and has been trained to use a pulse oximeter for ongoing SpO2 monitoring. Her incredible determination, combined with our dedicated rehabilitation services, led to this wonderful outcome. We are incredibly happy for Ms. Jessee and wish her continued health and happiness.
