This is also a great way to start the conversation about screens with your kids!

Too much of my job has become debunking influencer advice when it comes to parenting, child behavior, and ways you can mess up your kid.

I had to bring my content into the mix.

Yes, screens can be educational tools for kids but often what is categorized as educational content is overstimulating, quick moving videos with some ABCs thrown on top.

In early childhood, play is your child’s best education. Intentional screen time isn’t something we need to be afraid of, we just want to make sure it isn’t taking away from real-life play.

This is an easy way to decrease screen time without the meltdown that comes with it.

You are the expert on your child and not all kids respond to screens the same. Check in with this question from time to time and make adjustments as needed.

I buy very specifically chosen toys for play therapy but the categories of toys can also be really helpful when choosing items you are going to introduce to your child.

Thinking outside the box from what is in every toy aisle can help open new play opportunities at home.

What’s your favorite thrift toy find?

This information is for educational purposes only and is based on my experience as an early childhood play therapist. The examples shared reflect general patterns I have noticed over the years and are not about any specific child or family.

If you are not wanting to give up YT/YTK completely, there are parental controls that allow you to pick specific videos for your child, prevent their ability to search, and prevent suggested videos from popping up. I will make another video in this series about how to set those. I also encourage all families to continue to monitor what their child is watching even with strict parent controls as kids - even really young ones - are pretty incredible at finding their way around them.

Also please keep in mind that I specialize in early childhood, which is why I’m seeing the biggest impact from YouTube/Kids rather than Roblox, video games, social media addiction (though some things are creeping down to my age group). Let me know if these other platforms are an area you would like more information on and I will collaborate with another professional more specialized in those age groups to get you all the info you need.

Follow along with me as I continue this series - next video will cover the reasons why YT/YTK has such a different impact on kids than other types of screen time.

And let me know in the comments - what questions do you have or what would you like more information about?
