The death of a loved one brings many losses. For those who have lost a spouse or significant other, the absence of physical intimacy plays a significant role in the grieving process. In this installment of Conversations in Grief, Bereavement Counselor Hilary Furnish explores why this loss is often difficult to talk about and offers ways to cope if the lack of physical closeness is impacting your grief.

💖We are excited to continue our Volunteer Spotlight series by featuring the wonderful Lori Krasemann! 💖

Lori has been with us for over four years, serving as a receptionist and visiting patients in their homes. Now, you'll find her helping at the Thrift Shoppe, where she has been a mainstay since the very first day donations were accepted! If you see the "I’m Kind of a Big Deal" sign at her station, believe it—Lori’s dedication makes her a huge deal to our team.

Lori’s commitment to our mission is deeply personal. After witnessing the compassion Rainbow showed her father during his care, she felt called to give back. "I volunteer with joy, purpose, and thankfulness," Lori says. "I love seeing the excitement when a customer finds a ‘treasure’ or a ‘good deal!’"

Her advice for anyone considering joining the team is simple: "If you have an attitude of helpfulness and compassion, the staff will find a job that best meets your skills. This is a place to serve in truth and action!"

This past Saturday morning, the Community Room at our Rainbow Hospice Care Inpatient Center was filled with a powerful kind of healing. Our latest Broken Pots Workshop brought together members of our community to explore the Japanese art of Kintsugi as a way to reflect on loss.

By breaking and then rebuilding pottery, participants were able to physically navigate a process that often mirrors the challenge of rebuilding life after losing someone we love. While the reconstruction itself was a delicate task, it led to wonderful conversations and a real sense of connection among everyone in the room.

Each finished pot told a unique story, reflecting how every individual's grief journey is personal and unique. This workshop has become a special tradition for us at Rainbow, and we are so grateful to everyone who joined us and shared their story. We look forward to offering this again in the future!

Our Rainbow team members were busy this past weekend at the Wilderness Resort in the Wisconsin Dells! Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Sarah Stewart and Nurse Navigator Joani Robertson were featured speakers at the 77th Annual Wisconsin Student Nurses' Association (WSNA) Convention.

With over 28 years of combined experience at Rainbow between the two of them, they brought a wealth of knowledge and heart to the next generation of caregivers. They provided incredible insight into the world of end-of-life care, sharing their deep-rooted passion for hospice nursing with the future nurses of Wisconsin.

It’s one thing to provide amazing care to our patients—it’s another to mentor the future of nursing by sharing their years of expertise and dedication. We’re so lucky to have these two compassionate experts representing Rainbow out in the community!

Great job, Sarah and Joani! 👏❤️

In the world of hospice, the most vital tools aren't always clinical. Sometimes, "first aid" means knowing exactly what to say when someone is facing a mental health crisis.

In 2025, Rainbow prioritized mental health literacy by certifying 67 employees and volunteers in Mental Health First Aid. From our nurses in the field to our office staff, we’re building a "toolbox" of confidence and compassion. By moving beyond labels and focusing on "person-first" support, our team is more equipped than ever to provide holistic care for our patients, families, and each other.

See how Rainbow employees Jeanine Lew, Leslie Anderson, and Kendall Uttech led this transformative year and are changing the conversation around mental health in hospice.
