National Hospice and Palliative Care Month is celebrated every November to raise awareness about the importance of comfort, quality of life, and talking with loved ones about preferences as we age and become seriously ill.

Today, the staff and volunteers of Rainbow Community Care would like to pause a moment to express our gratitude to the thousands of patients, families, and healthcare professionals who have placed their trust in our hospice teams since 1990. Together, we have turned Jefferson County into a place where a higher percentage of people choose to involve hospice in their final days, weeks, and months than anywhere else in Wisconsin!

Likewise, we’d like to thank the many people who have turned to our palliative care team for help when navigating the complex world of serious illness. When we first launched this community-based program a decade ago, we only cared for about 13 patients and families a day on average. Today, that number has increased to nearly 160!

A bucket list is a set of experiences, goals, and achievements a person wants to accomplish before they pass away.

Some folks set very specific, achievable goals like “taking a hot air balloon ride in the fall”, “skydiving over the Grand Canyon”, or “riding 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu”, while others articulate more abstract, personal aspirations like “know unconditional love.”

No matter how vague or detailed, however, one thing is clear - it often takes a village to make those wishes come true. For 90-year-old Dolores Mate of Waterloo, that meant working closely with her pastor, daughter, Rainbow patient care team, and the Cubs organization to cheer on her beloved baseball team one last time at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

A Brand-New Option for Compassionate Care in Whitewater!
Yesterday was an incredible day on the campus of Fairhaven Senior Services!

Numerous people – including local healthcare professionals and folks from the greater Whitewater community - were on hand to attend the Grand Opening of the Hospice Suites made possible through our special partnership with Fairhaven.

The first of their kind in rural southern Wisconsin, these beautiful new suites — located on the second floor of Fairhaven's Advanced Assisted Living Wing – are sacred spaces that have been specifically created for hospice patients currently living at home, but whose families are looking for an extra layer of support in an assisted living community long known for the quality of its care.

Thoughtfully furnished by Rainbow Community Care, each suite has been designed to provide a peaceful, home-like setting where residents and family members can share quality time together during one of life’s most important journeys.

Thanks to all who came out to help us celebrate!

What an inspiring night at the Watertown-Beaver Dam Elks Lodge No. 666 for the annual Enrique Award Banquet on October 20th!

Huge congratulations to Detective Dakota Lenske of the Watertown Police Department, who received the Enrique Award for his exceptional commitment to prevention and promoting substance-free lifestyles.

We were honored to partner with the Elks! Our own Britanie Peaslee, Community Resource Liaison at Rainbow Community Care and Co-Chair of JCDFC, and Vanessa Leaders, Executive Officer of the Jefferson County Drug Free Coalition (JCDFC), were there to recognize the Watertown Police Department and Officer Ben Miller for their vital partnership.

In expressing gratitude for their efforts, Britanie Peaslee stated that their dedication "does not go unnoticed." Vanessa Leaders further emphasized the coalition's appreciation for the entire Watertown Police Department, saying, "we want to again extend our deepest gratitude... not just for the work you all do, but for the integrity, compassion, and dedication with which you do it.”

Thank you to all the honorees for working to keep our community healthy and safe!
