Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Awareness Month

👩‍🏫What is EDS?

This group of inherited illnesses affects the tissue that supports and protects other tissues and organs in the body, also known as connective tissue. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome mainly affects the skin, joints and blood vessel walls.

Joints might be too loose and able to move too far. Skin might be stretchy and might not heal well after injury.

🦓Why the zebra?

Because EDS is rare and many medical professionals do not know or understand what it is.

When you hear hoof beats behind you, don't expect to see a zebra." Medical students are given this quote as a way to let them know that they should look for a common diagnosis for the symptoms they are given instead of the possibility of it being a rare case. This is why people with EDS refer to themselves as Zebras.

When you see a zebra, you know it's a zebra — but no two zebras have identical stripes, just like two people with EDS are not the same.

We make look normal to others and that why it is called invisible illness or syndrome. People often think we are faking or nothing is wrong with us, when really we are living a nightmare.

It took 31 years of misdiagnosis and dozens of different doctors to finally have one that put everything together as a whole picture to get it right for me.

Even though I got a diagnosis there is no cure, all you can do is treat the symptoms and injuries.

Every day is different, Hell minute to minute is different.

If you have a few of these together you might have EDS!

✅Overly flexible (hypermobile) joints — it might feel like your joints are loose or unstable.

✅Soft skin that’s thinner and stretches more than it should.

✅Bruising easily or more often than usual.

✅Unusual scarring or taking unusually long to heal after a cut or small wound.

✅Joint and muscle pain. (Chronic pain).

✅Fatigue (feeling tired all the time).

✅Difficulty concentrating.

✅Problems with the valves that push blood through your heart.

✅Severe spine curvature (scoliosis).

✅Thin corneas in your eyes.

✅Bowed (curved) limbs.

✅Teeth and gum problems.
