Rather than steering the play, try joining in. Let them choose the toy, activity, or topic. Then match their energy and add a few words of your own.

April is autism acceptance and awareness month! As a Speech Language Pathologist, I have the honor of working with autistic children and their families every day. My favorite and most memorable moments as an SLP have been with my autistic clients. To name just a few: adding Shrek characters to AAC, comparing and contrasting Kenmore appliances, stimming with straws, repeating lines from old infomercials, having honest conversations about the health of "Pop the Pig," hours of play with alphabet puzzles, and endless hugs and squeezes. Of course there are moments of frustration, dysregulation, and miscommunication but working through those moments is worth it every time. My personal and professional life are all the more rich because I get to laugh and connect with autistic children daily! ∞

There’s no quick fix in speech therapy.

Progress doesn’t come from one perfect session. It comes from showing up, practicing often, and building a relationship where your child feels safe to try, fail, and grow.

This is what we focus on. Not perfection, but steady progress with the right support.
