"Lung cancer is the second-most common cancer in the United States, and the most common cause of cancer-related death.

While many things contribute to your risk of developing lung cancer – such as your genes, your family history of cancer and exposure to carcinogenic substances such as asbestos – cigarette smoking is the No. 1 risk factor.

The best way to fight lung cancer is to quit smoking, or to not start smoking to begin with. But even once you’ve stopped smoking, your risk isn’t completely gone. For patients who used to smoke heavily, screening for lung cancer through a low-dose computed tomography scan may be the best way to get treatment when it matters most."

They assess, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic health conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and develop individualized care plans.

Beyond clinical care, nurse practitioners place strong emphasis on patient education, prevention, and health management, helping patients understand their conditions and make informed choices about their wellbeing.

We're proud to celebrate the outstanding nurse practitioners of Conemaugh Health System! Happy Nurse Practitioner Week! 🩺

After experiencing a devastating ankle injury during a basketball game, Anna Moon was uncertain about her future in sports. Described as "tough-as-nails" the injury left her in writhing pain. After being rushed to Conemaugh's Emergency Department and being evaluated by the team, no time was wasted getting her into the trauma room and summoning Richard Goodrich, DO, orthopedic trauma surgeon.

After an astounding four-hour surgery that took the team late into the night, Dr. Goodrich was able to successfully repair Anna's ankle, setting her on the path back to playing the sports she loves.

Now a freshman at Somerset Area High School, Anna is back to doing just that. Read more about her story at Conemaugh.org/real-patients-real-stories/patientstories/2025/11/10/what-struck-me-was-the-depth-of-care--dedication-doctor-goodrich-provides.

This Saturday, November 8, is National Lung Screening Day. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, but when found early, it is far more treatable. Screening with a low-dose CT (LDCT) can reduce the risk of dying from lung cancer by up to 20 percent.

This National Lung Screening Day, we are raising awareness about the power of early detection. If you are between 50 and 80 years old, currently smoke, or have quit within the past 15 years, you may qualify for a low-dose CT lung screening at Conemaugh Health System.

Do not wait for symptoms. Talk to your healthcare provider today about whether a lung screening is right for you. Learn more about lung health and screening options at Conemaugh.org/Lung
