How are Sprains and Strains Typically Treated?

Simple, mild strains and sprains can be treated pretty easily. After you're diagnosed, the doctor might simply send you home and recommend rest, icing the injury, compression over the area, and elevating the injured body part. However, your injury might be more severe and require professional treatment.

For these more serious injuries, the doctor will provide the proper treatment to immobilize the injured area, and likely offer over-the-counter or prescription painkillers. These two treatments together will both address the pain and help the injury heal over the next two to six weeks. The doctor might also decide you could benefit from short-term physical therapy, so he or she might refer you to a specialist for that. Some especially serious cases of sprains and strains require surgery, but this is uncommon.

Sprains and Strains:

A sprain is a stretched or torn ligament. Ligaments are tissues that connect bones at a joint. Falling, twisting, or getting hit can all cause a sprain. Ankle and wrist sprains are common. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and being unable to move your joint. You might feel a pop or tear when the injury happens.

A strain is a stretched or torn muscle or tendon. Tendons are tissues that connect muscle to bone. Twisting or pulling these tissues can cause a strain. Strains can happen suddenly or develop over time. Back and hamstring muscle strains are common. Many people get strains playing sports. Symptoms include pain, muscle spasms, swelling, and trouble moving the muscle.

What Is Included in a Sports Physical?

Sports physicals take a detailed look at each child's overall health, as well as assess height and weight and make sure they are up to date on vaccinations. Sports physicals may involve additional evaluations. The primary care physician will examine the child's joints and flexibility, and will discuss any past injuries or concerns, such as asthma, sprains, fractures, concussions, and previous surgeries or medications. In addition to this, they will also check the child's heart health and assess their family history for any risks. The intention of a sports physical is to ensure that every child can safely participate in athletic activities.

What Conditions Does Immediate Care Treat?

Immediate care is able to evaluate, diagnose and provide treatment to patients suffering from minor medical ailments. Life happens at all hours of the day, meaning that medical concerns will arrive outside of most people's primary care physician's hours that require immediate, non-emergency, and non-urgent attention. For life-threatening injuries or illnesses, people need to go to a hospital emergency room for the care they need.

What Do You Mean by Immediate Care?

When people get sick or injured, they have several options for getting medical care. It can be confusing to know which option is the best one though. Immediate care is similar to awalk-in clinicin that it provides medical attention to patients who need to see a doctor immediately for a condition that is not considered to be life-threatening. For life-threatening injuries or illnesses, people need to get themselves to a hospital emergency room for the care they need.

Immediate care doesn't require patients to make an appointment, instead, they are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. While immediate care can take care of awide range of medical concerns, they are not intended to treat emergencies. They are also often limited to the diagnostic equipment they have on hand, so may not be able to treat serious conditions. Serious conditions can be better evaluated, diagnosed, and treated through urgent care, as long as the condition isn't life-threatening.

What Is a Walk-in Clinic?

A walk-in clinic is a facility that provides basic medical care for acute conditions that are not serious enough to require a visit to the emergency room. Often located near retailers or pharmacies, walk-in clinics are convenient for patients to find and use. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners usually staff these clinics.

Originally, walk-in clinics were designed to treat patients for common, non-threatening conditions who were uninsured or underinsured. While walk-ins are accepted at Internal Medicine and Family Practice Clinic, appointments are also available. A focus is placed on convenience, quality of care, and affordability.

Women's Health Checkup:

Regular health exams and tests can help find problems before they start. They can also help you find problems early, when your chances for treatment are better. As a woman, you need some special exams and screenings. During your checkup, your health care provider will usually do:
- A pelvic exam - an exam to check if internal female organs are normal by feeling their shape and size.
- A Pap test - a test to check for cancer of the cervix, the opening to a woman's uterus. Cells from the cervix are examined under a microscope.
- A clinical breast exam - to check for breast cancer by feeling and looking at your breasts.

Your health care provider may also recommend other tests, including a mammogram or a test for HPV.

Heat Stroke:

Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. It occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause permanent disability or death if the person does not receive emergency treatment.
