🌿 Milk Sickness and White Snakeroot: What Small Herd Goat and Cattle Dairy Owners, Horse Owners, and You Need to Know 🌿

Many people are surprised to learn that one of the most serious public health threats faced by early Indiana settlers came not from infectious disease, but from contaminated milk.

“Milk sickness” was responsible for numerous deaths in the 1800s, and possibly the mother of Abraham Lincoln. The cause? A native plant called White Snakeroot, which is toxic to livestock if consumed and to humans drinking milk from those animals.

When lactating animals eat White Snakeroot, the toxin can pass into their milk. In the past, families who drank this milk, often from a single cow, were at risk of serious illness and even death.

Thankfully, modern dairy practices have nearly eliminated this risk:
✅ Animals are now raised away from wooded pasture edges where the plant grows
✅ Milk from many cows is mixed in bulk tanks, diluting any potential accidental exposure
✅ Farmers and veterinarians are better equipped to identify and manage risks

Still, White Snakeroot grows in all 92 Indiana counties and throughout the Midwest. It typically becomes a concern in late summer and fall, when pasture grass is sparse and after the first frost when other plants wilt.

Livestock, including horses that ingest the plant may show signs such as depressionaltered posture, labored breathing, and tremors. In nursing neonates, the toxins can pass through milk, making them especially vulnerable.

If you manage a small herd or operate a family dairy, it’s important to know what this plant looks like and keep your animals away from it.
