The Cycle of Self-Abandonment

Self-abandonment happens when we repeatedly put others’ needs, comfort, or approval above our own. It often starts with people-pleasing and over-giving, then turns into resentment, guilt, emotional withdrawal, and eventually doing it all over again.

This cycle can look like:
• Giving more than you have and not receiving the same care back
• Feeling angry or resentful (at others and yourself)
• Putting up emotional walls or pushing people away
• Feeling guilty for having needs or expressing emotions
• Overcompensating to “fix” the guilt by giving even more

Over time, this pattern disconnects you from your boundaries, needs, and self-trust.

Breaking the cycle starts with awareness.
You are allowed to have needs, set limits, and choose yourself-without guilt. Healing self-abandonment is about learning how to stay emotionally present for yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable.

If this cycle feels familiar, support can help. You don’t have to unlearn it alone. 💙

When life feels overwhelming, it can help to pause and ask: What’s in my control-and what isn’t?

Focusing your energy on what you can influence (your actions, choices, and responses) can reduce stress and create a greater sense of stability. Letting go of what’s outside your control is an act of self-care, not giving up.

Understanding Emotional Dysregulation in Children

Emotional dysregulation refers to when a child has difficulty managing their emotional responses in ways that are appropriate to the situation. This can look like big reactions to small problems, sudden mood changes, trouble calming down, frequent outbursts, or shutting down when overwhelmed. These behaviors aren’t signs of a “bad” child-they’re signs of a child who needs help building the skills to cope with strong feelings.

Kids experiencing emotional dysregulation may struggle with:
• Managing frustration or disappointment
• Handling transitions or changes in routine
• Communicating feelings effectively
• Navigating relationships with peers or family
• Feeling safe and grounded in their own bodies

At Beyond Therapy, we understand that emotional regulation is a learned skill-and many children need extra support developing it.

🧠 How Therapy Can Help

Individual therapy gives children a safe, supportive space to:
• Learn tools to identify and express emotions
• Practice calming strategies like deep breathing, grounding, and cognitive reframing
• Build coping skills for stress, anxiety, anger, and overwhelm
• Strengthen problem-solving and communication abilities

Family therapy helps caregivers and children work together by:
• Improving communication and connection
• Building routines and tools for emotional support at home
• Helping caregivers understand triggers, behaviors, and how to respond in supportive ways
• Creating consistency across the child’s environments

Together, therapy empowers children and families to navigate emotions with confidence, compassion, and resilience.

If your child is struggling to manage big feelings, support is available. Emotional regulation can be taught-and your child can thrive with the right tools and guidance. Reach out to us to learn more.

As the days grow shorter and darker, many people notice a dip in their mood-often called the “winter blues.” This seasonal slump can look like low energy, reduced motivation, or feeling a bit heavier emotionally than usual.

It’s important to remember that experiencing the winter blues is common and completely normal. Changing light, weather, and routines affect all of us in different ways.

You’re not alone, and small, intentional steps can make a meaningful difference. We’re here to support you through the season.

The Power of Core Beliefs in Mental Health

Our core beliefs-those deep, often unconscious ideas we hold about ourselves, others, and the world-shape how we think, feel, and behave. When these beliefs are negative or outdated (“I’m not enough,” “I have to handle everything alone”), they can quietly undermine our well-being.

The good news? Core beliefs can be reframed.

With awareness, compassion, and support, we can challenge old narratives and replace them with healthier, more empowering ones. Healing often begins with asking: Is this belief true-or just familiar?

Reframing isn’t pretending everything is perfect. It’s choosing a perspective that supports growth, resilience, and self-kindness.

If you’re ready to explore your core beliefs, we’re here to help. 💙

What Is a Somatic Reset-And Why It Helps With Overwhelm

We often talk about the power of a somatic reset. Simply put, a somatic reset is a brief, intentional practice that helps your body shift out of “survival mode” and back into a calmer, more regulated state.

When we’re overwhelmed, the body tends to hold tension, speed up the breath, and activate the nervous system. A somatic reset uses gentle movements, grounding, or breathwork to signal safety back to the body-which then helps the mind follow.

Why it’s helpful:
• It brings you out of fight-or-flight and into the present moment
• It reduces physical tension that builds during stress
• It supports clearer thinking and emotional balance
• It’s quick, accessible, and can be done anytime you feel overloaded

Somatic resets don’t erase stress, but they give your nervous system a chance to breathe-helping you move through overwhelm with more steadiness and self-compassion.
