What an enjoyable afternoon the residents of The Bungalows at Jonesboro had today while visiting the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza. Tyronza is a small town with a population of a little over 600 residents sandwiched within 30 minutes of Jonesboro and Memphis. It is located in the Mississippi Delta and surrounded by acres and acres of rich farmland. In 1934, a group of sharecroppers, black and white, formed the Southern Tenant Farmers Union. There original heaquarters, a former dry cleaners and gas station, is where the museum is located, Next door, a former bank building is also a part of the museum. The mural on the outside of the building was painted by Vince Pearcy, the son of Patsy Colburn who is a resident at The Bungalows. And to our surprise, right around the corner is a two story house that was the childhood home of our resident, Tim Craig. It meant so much to us all to see Tim's former home. Then, we were all invited to the Senior Center next door for cookies and hot chocolate. While there, former Bungalow nurse, Julie Brown, shared information about how to keep our brains healthy. Julie now works for UAMS Center on Aging and we were so happy to spend the afternoon with her. Also, the first lady of Tyronza, Cheryl Woods, shared more interesting facts about the history and future of Tyronza. Thanks also to Kristina Woods for welcoming us and helping with the refreshments. A big thank you goes to Will and the others at the museum. Everyone was so inviting and helpful. We all had a wonderful time!๐
