This is a common type of migraine. It's usual for it to be both eyes. Typically it last 20-30 minutes then about 15 minutes later a headache and possible nausea occurs.

Do not look at the sun before, during or after the ellipse unless you have the special glasses. Regular sunglasses are not enough! Short and long term retinal and macular problems can occur. One way to see it is to punch a small hole in a piece of paper and hold it several inches in front of another piece of paper and see the image.
