This is what can happen when a sample freezes or gets too cold, especially when an ice pack touches the tube directly! Below are a few cold weather shipping tips! ❄️

Ice packs are still recommended, but make sure the ice pack does not touch the sample tubes!

Blood should clot normally in the tube, but excess cold (especially direct ice-pack contact) can cause abnormal clotting or partial freezing, which may compromise the sample. Compromised samples can affect testing, delay results, or require a redraw.

How to pack your sample (quick steps):
• Wrap tubes with paper towel, newspaper, or bubble wrap
• Put tubes in a sealed ziploc bag

Watch our sample packing video on our FAQ page for a quick demo: www.dldlabs.com/resources/

Not all samples are created equal and good-quality ones make all the difference in accurate diagnostics!

These tubes show what properly collected and processed blood samples look like after clotting and spinning in the lab. To help your samples look like this, collect blood in red or yellow serum tubes, let it clot for 30–60 minutes (longer in the winter), then ship it to us with a cold pack that isn’t touching the tubes directly (see our sample packing video on our website: www.dldlabs.com/resources). We’ll handle the centrifuging and separation once the samples arrive.

These are exactly the type of samples that give you reliable results. Stay tuned — next we’ll show what to avoid when sending samples in (especially in winter).

Keeping animals healthy through the cold months doesn’t have to be stressful with the right care and a little extra attention, they can thrive all season long.

Here are a few winter care reminders from Delta Livestock Diagnostics:
• Fresh, unfrozen water is a must (yep… even when it’s below freezing).
• Quality forage and proper nutrition help keep body temps up.
• Shelter from wind and moisture goes a long way in preventing illness.
• Watch for early signs of stress or infection, winter is no time to guess.
• Routine health checks help you stay ahead of problems before they spread.

Cold weather may be tough, but your herd is tougher and we’re here to help you keep them healthy, comfortable, and performing their best all winter long. 🤍🐑🐖🐐

Strong herds start with smart diagnostics. 🐄

By understanding tests like BVDV Ag, anaplasmosis, and neospora, and knowing when to use PCR vs. ELISA, you can prevent costly outbreaks and improve reproductive success.

At Delta Livestock Diagnostics, we’re here to make livestock testing straightforward, accurate, and dependable — because better information means better outcomes. 🧪💛

Understanding your testing options helps you get the most out of your diagnostics. 👩‍🔬

🔹 PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) detects the pathogen’s DNA or RNA in the sample collected – helping determine whether an active infection is present.
🔹 ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) detects antibodies — showing whether the animal has been exposed to the disease in the past.
🔹 Lateral Flow Rapid Tests (On-Farm Chute-Side Tests) detects pregnancy right on the farm for cattle, goat, and sheep without specialized equipment – perfect for fast pregnancy decisions and on-site herd management.

In short:
• PCR = Detects the pathogen’s genetic material in the sample
• ELISA = Detects exposure history
• Rapid Tests = Provide quick results for on-farm decisions

Using these testing options together gives a complete picture of herd health, helping you make faster, more informed management decisions. 🌾🧬

Neospora Caninum is one of the leading causes of abortion and reproductive failure in cattle. 🐄 Because it often shows no outward signs, testing is essential to detect exposure and prevent transmission.

Why it matters:
🔹 Infected cows can pass the parasite to calves during pregnancy.
🔹 The disease can remain in herds undetected for years.
🔹 Identifying positive animals helps producers make better breeding and management decisions.

Since dogs are one of the main carriers of the parasite, keeping dogs away from calving areas is important for prevention.

Regular screening helps reduce reproductive losses and protect your operation’s bottom line. 💛
