Black History Month | Speech Therapy

This Black History Month, weโ€™re honoring Black leaders whose work shaped speech therapy and communication support for children and families.๐ŸคŽ

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Hallie Quinn Brown (c. 1850โ€“1949) is recognized as the first known Black speech-language pathologist. She was a prominent 19th-century elocutionist, educator, and social activist. Brown taught elocution at Wilberforce University, authored books on voice training and physical culture, and advanced the study of speech long before the formalization of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Dr. Sandra C. Holley-Carter (1943โ€“2020) was a monumental figure in speech-language pathology. She became the first African American president of ASHA and worked tirelessly to enhance diversity in the profession. She advocated for recognizing cultural differences in speech, preventing misdiagnosis, and redefining communication disorders to better serve all communities.

At Miracle Kids, we honor their legacy by supporting every childโ€™s voice, communication growth, and expressive confidence through compassionate, individualized speech therapy. ๐Ÿ’™

Arkansas State Universityโ€™s academic and business offices will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 29.

This decision was made out of an abundance of caution due to continued hazardous driving conditions on side roads and in rural areas. While Facilities Management crews have made significant progress across campus, some academic buildings and walkways have not yet been fully cleared, limiting safe and accessible access for all members of our campus community.

Additionally, many local school districts remain closed, which creates challenges for employees and some students. University officials are coordinating closely with area superintendents as conditions continue to be assessed.

Due to lingering hazardous conditions on side roads, campus walkways and around academic buildings, Arkansas State University's academic and business offices will remain closed on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

While main roads are mostly passable, side roads, rural areas, campus walkways and academic buildings are still not clear. As the university prepares to hopefully resume normal operations later this week, Facilities Management is recalling many employees to return to work beginning on Wednesday to assist with campus cleanup and readiness efforts.
