Neuromatrix Theory of Pain
There are many factors to consider when looking at pain being experienced by a client. There are biological, psychological, and social elements to take in to consideration. This is why it is important to have a complete history of injuries, no matter how insignificant one may think it they are.
The neuromatrix is a theoretical model of pain that posits a complex brain-based mechanism for pain generation, influenced by both genetic and sensory factors. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the intricate relationships between biological, psychological, and social factors in the development and maintenance of chronic pain, and informs a more holistic approach to pain management.
One client I have came to me with a belief that pain would be forever a part of her life and massage therapy was a last-ditch effort to try to resolve some of the issues she had been facing for years. In my initial meeting with her we discussed what she had experienced and what led up to the pain she has been dealing with for so long. I explained my approach to massage therapy and what to expect out of the sessions. Out of the many items we discussed, one was her mindset regarding pain. It has been a few months since we started our sessions together. We have gone from every other week to once a month for "routine maintenance". One of the changes she has noticed is her perception of the pain she feels. She once told me, after just a few sessions, that she now feels HOPEFULL, which was a concept she hadn't experienced in some time. With this has come many benefits, including better sleep and even taking up swimming.
If you have a chance, please take a few minutes and watch this video from a TedTalk with Lorimer Moseley. https://youtu.be/gwd-wLdIHjs?si=eVfYXODMi9nOTbLB
From the video description: "Why do we hurt? Do we actually experience pain, or is it merely illusion? In this video, Lorimer Moseley explores these questions, and position the pain that we feel as our bodies' way of protecting us from damaging tissues further. He also looks at what this might mean for those who suffer from chronic pain."
Please don't continue on in life allowing pain to dictate what you can and can't do. Let me work with you to see if neuromuscular therapy is an option for you.
