Fear-based prevention messages might grab attention—but they don’t change behavior. Programs that rely on scare tactics or one-time assemblies show no long-term effect on substance use and may even reduce trust between students and adults. Real prevention empowers young people with skills, support, and follow-up—not fear.

We support approaches that strengthen—not shame—our youth. Let's go beyond ""Just Say No"" and provide prevention education that inspires and teaches decision-making skills that have the greatest long-term impact.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it’s so important to remember that the impact of abuse doesn’t stop at the relationship itself—it can affect every part of a person’s life, including their health and recovery. 💜

We’re proud that StepOne Service connects people not only to substance use resources but also to supports for safety, healing, and hope.

According to the "Survivors and Substance Abuse" report by the Battered Women's Justice Project (BWJP) women with a recent history of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) had nearly six times the risk of problematic alcohol use compared to women with no IPV history.

September is Recovery Month—a time to honor those taking their first steps toward healing and the dedicated staff who walk beside them. At StepOne Service, our team’s compassion and commitment ensure every patient is met with dignity, safety, and hope. This month, we celebrate both the courage of our patients and the extraordinary staff who make recovery possible.

At Mercy Hospital Joplin in Joplin, Missouri, Lauren Knight has been working diligently for several years to make sure that all patients who call the intake line are admitted promptly, or redirected efficiently to the appropriate level of care to ensure people have the best shot at entering long term recovery. She is passionate, focused, and highly professional within the hospital and with our patients. She is a true HOPE DEALER.

Important info when communicating about Substance Use Disorder: see below 💚

In recovery, language matters—and so does our response when someone uses again.

A lapse is a short return to substance use. A relapse usually means a longer pattern. Why this matters: Calling a lapse a relapse can make people feel like they’ve failed—but they haven’t. A lapse might be part of the process.

Recovery is not a straight line—it's a journey. When people stumble, choose language that supports and not shames the individual.

The way we talk about substance use can either reinforce stigma—or break it. When we use recovery-oriented language, we affirm dignity, recognize humanity and support recovery.

Recovery-oriented language says:
+ You are more than your diagnosis
+ You are not your past
+ You are worthy of care

We speak hope. We speak dignity. We speak truth.
