We're pleased to announce the next round of Fireweed Award recipients for their exceptional care and service to the community. 42 nominations were submitted this quarter, and four employees were randomly selected for hospital wide recognition:

Kassandra Burke is an Obstetrics nurse who was nominated by a patient for her supportive care and detailed preparation during the patient’s second delivery. “Kassandra was beyond supportive and asked for all the details of my previous induction because I had several concerns. She remembered everything and did everything she could to take care of me. She was so excited to see me on her next shift. Kassandra was so friendly and I think every mom needs that energy while in the hospital.”

Shawn Nolan is a Maintenance Groundskeeper who was nominated by a colleague for his outstanding work ethic and commitment to safety. “It is a well-known fact throughout the organization that Shawn goes above and beyond to make sure the campus is always in outstanding condition – no matter the season. I witnessed Shawn arrive on a Monday morning after a big snowstorm at 0500 and he wasted no time in grabbing a shovel to remove snow from the stairs and sidewalks, then hop in the Bobcat to continue removing snow from walkways and entrances. Shawn’s commitment to ensuring our staff and patients can safely get to where they need to go is remarkable.”

Penny Bailey is an Administrative Clinical Office Coordinator on the Medical/Surgical Unit who was nominated by three colleagues for her leadership, resourcefulness, and care for others. “Penny truly cares about the staff, anticipates our needs, and looks out for everyone. Her acumen and expansive knowledge of hospital procedures, resources, and staff make her an invaluable resource for expediting patient care. Her grounded communication helps keep patient care flowing. Penny’s ability to stay calm under pressure sets a great example for the rest of us.”

Danielle “Dani” Thorn is an Obstetrics nurse who was nominated by a patient for her leadership, strength, and support during the patient’s delivery. “I was nervous about being in a hospital environment since my first labor was at a midwifery, so I thought I would be very uncomfortable. But Dani went above and beyond for me and was truly there by my side the entire time. Not only that, with so many others in the room including trainees and visitors, she showed leadership and strength in such a positive and graceful manner. I was not there long, but I will remember this day for the rest of my life.”

A celebration event was held on campus and each recipient received a recognition pin, a gift card courtesy of the BRH Foundation, and a designated parking spot for the quarter.

Nominations for next quarter are currently being accepted. To submit a nomination, visit bartletthospital.org/fireweedaward. Continuing sponsorship for this award is generously provided by the BRH Foundation.

All hospital facilities and clinics are scheduled to be open today, Monday, January 5 to deliver essential medical services. We will continue to closely monitor the weather and road conditions throughout the day and may adjust plans accordingly.

We understand that current weather conditions may prevent patients from making an appointment. If you need to change an appointment scheduled for today, please call the clinic or service location and let the care team know. Bartlett Regional Hospital welcomed a special delivery on January 3rd – the first baby born in 2026. Bjorn Schroth was born weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces and is 20.5 inches long. Bjorn is the first child of Annie Ortega and Austin Schroth of Juneau.

“The nurses are great and have been super helpful to us as new parents,” said Annie. “Before Bjorn was born, a coworker commented that his name was fitting of a boat captain, so to receive this handmade boat is really special,” said Austin.

Bartlett Beginnings gifted the family a handmade wooden rocking boat filled with newborn items. The family is the ninth recipient of what has become a Bartlett Beginnings tradition for the first baby of the year. The boat was made by Dr. Lindy Jones, an Emergency Department Physician at Bartlett, and his wife, Colleen Jones. This year’s boat is made from Sitka Spruce donated by Icy Straits Lumber in Hoonah.

With nearly 300 babies born a year at Bartlett, Bjorn is the first of many special lives to be welcomed at the hospital in 2026.
