Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation loves the opportunity to be a part of the Fireweed Awards! Congratulations to award recipients Shawn Nolan, Penny Bailey, Kassandra Burke, and Dani Thorn. Thank you for your exceptional care - and making Bartlett amazing!

We're pleased to announce the next round of Fireweed Award recipients for their exceptional care and service to the community. 42 nominations were submitted this quarter, and four employees were randomly selected for hospital wide recognition:

Kassandra Burke is an Obstetrics nurse who was nominated by a patient for her supportive care and detailed preparation during the patient’s second delivery. “Kassandra was beyond supportive and asked for all the details of my previous induction because I had several concerns. She remembered everything and did everything she could to take care of me. She was so excited to see me on her next shift. Kassandra was so friendly and I think every mom needs that energy while in the hospital.”

Shawn Nolan is a Maintenance Groundskeeper who was nominated by a colleague for his outstanding work ethic and commitment to safety. “It is a well-known fact throughout the organization that Shawn goes above and beyond to make sure the campus is always in outstanding condition – no matter the season. I witnessed Shawn arrive on a Monday morning after a big snowstorm at 0500 and he wasted no time in grabbing a shovel to remove snow from the stairs and sidewalks, then hop in the Bobcat to continue removing snow from walkways and entrances. Shawn’s commitment to ensuring our staff and patients can safely get to where they need to go is remarkable.”

Penny Bailey is an Administrative Clinical Office Coordinator on the Medical/Surgical Unit who was nominated by three colleagues for her leadership, resourcefulness, and care for others. “Penny truly cares about the staff, anticipates our needs, and looks out for everyone. Her acumen and expansive knowledge of hospital procedures, resources, and staff make her an invaluable resource for expediting patient care. Her grounded communication helps keep patient care flowing. Penny’s ability to stay calm under pressure sets a great example for the rest of us.”

Danielle “Dani” Thorn is an Obstetrics nurse who was nominated by a patient for her leadership, strength, and support during the patient’s delivery. “I was nervous about being in a hospital environment since my first labor was at a midwifery, so I thought I would be very uncomfortable. But Dani went above and beyond for me and was truly there by my side the entire time. Not only that, with so many others in the room including trainees and visitors, she showed leadership and strength in such a positive and graceful manner. I was not there long, but I will remember this day for the rest of my life.”

A celebration event was held on campus and each recipient received a recognition pin, a gift card courtesy of the BRH Foundation, and a designated parking spot for the quarter.

Nominations for next quarter are currently being accepted. To submit a nomination, visit bartletthospital.org/fireweedaward. Continuing sponsorship for this award is generously provided by the BRH Foundation.

All hospital facilities and clinics are scheduled to be open today, Monday, January 5 to deliver essential medical services. We will continue to closely monitor the weather and road conditions throughout the day and may adjust plans accordingly.

We understand that current weather conditions may prevent patients from making an appointment. If you need to change an appointment scheduled for today, please call the clinic or service location and let the care team know. In some cases, an alternative format such as telemedicine may be available.

A big THANK YOU to BRH Facilities, City and Borough of Juneau, and Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities crews for their tireless efforts to keep our roadways safe.

Congratulations to Annie and Austin on their sweet new little one!

As the festive season gets underway, Bartlett Regional Hospital is excited to announce its second annual ‘Light Up a Life’ community celebration. The event will take place on Saturday, December 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Mendenhall Mall.

‘Light Up a Life’ is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and reflect on the year while remembering and celebrating the lives of the people who are special to us. This year’s event will include a tree lighting ceremony, serving as a reminder of all the people we love who are no longer with us. Dr. Bob Urata is scheduled to speak and hang the first remembrance ornament.

Those who contribute a minimum of $10 can add the name of their loved one to an ornament that will be hung on the tree throughout the holiday season. Hospice volunteers will be present at the Mendenhall Mall throughout the month to assist those interested in purchasing and hanging ornaments.

This community event is a fundraising opportunity for the hospital’s hospice services and will include a silent auction featuring donated items from local individuals and businesses. If you cannot attend the event but would like to donate, please email hhhc@bartletthospital.org or call (907) 796-8160. All funds raised through the event go towards ensuring that no patient or family is left struggling to cope alone in the community.
