It takes a strong woman to raise a strong woman… and in midwifery, it’s women who nurture families, guide births, and shape the future.

From the mothers we support to the midwives on our team, every strong woman is building the next generation — of caregivers, leaders, and changemakers.

Before they were midwives, directors, administrators, and birth workers... They were just babies, too.

🌿 Madi — Director, Midwife, Oldest Sibling, Mom of One, Reframe Queen with a Touch of Bad Words Thrown In
This little girl grew up to start her midwifery career right out of high school and now serves as Director at JFBC, guiding families and a team with the same steady presence she probably used keeping up with all those siblings.

🌿 Joelle — Midwife, Second Career, Twin, Mom of Four, Professional Drink Spiller
This little girl grew up to become a midwife on her second career path, a twin, and a mother of four, bringing lived experience, perspective, and calm strength into every birth space.

🌿 Ambur — CNM, Military Background, Mom of Four, Not from Here but Fits Right In
This little girl grew up to serve in the military, become a Certified Nurse Midwife, raise four children, and move to Juneau to support families at JFBC. Strength and steadiness show up in many forms.

🌿 Ashleigh — Office Admin, JFBC Mama, Oldest Middle Child, Can't Stay Away from JFBC
This little girl grew up to have both of her babies at JFBC and now serves as Office Administrator and Facility Manager, caring for the space that once cared for her.

Community midwifery has always been rooted in equity. Today, our responsibility is to return to that foundation—by listening deeply, practicing respectfully, building trust, and ensuring every birthing person receives safe, culturally competent, relationship-based care. Equity isn’t a trend; it’s a commitment woven into how we ‘help people out’ every day.

This month is a reminder of history, a call to action, and a recommitment to the work. Black history is birth history. And honoring it means continuing to build a future where every family is supported and every story is respected.

Black birth stories are powerful. They hold joy, vulnerability, complexity, and resilience. By listening to these stories—not just the numbers—we understand what people need, what support looks like in real time, and what respectful care truly means.

Hearing these stories shapes how midwives show up in practice. Next week, we’ll share how the role of community midwifery creates safer, more equitable care for all families.

Valentine’s Day, but make it midwifery...

You had a Valentine.
Then you had a midwife.
Then you had a baby.
Honestly, we think we’re the real plot twist... because love stories look a little different around here — and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Happy Valentine’s from your local professional third wheels. 💘😌💖

Even with generations of strength and leadership, Black birthing people continue to face disproportionate risks in pregnancy and birth. The inequities are systemic, preventable, and rooted in a long history that separates today’s outcomes from the traditions that once safeguarded communities.

These statistics are not the whole story. Behind every data point is a person, a family, and a lived experience. Next week, we’ll hold space for Black birth stories—voices that deserve to be heard beyond the numbers.
