Why do these bread brands have such different glyphosate levels?

THE MAIN REASON: Pre-harvest desiccation. Conventional farmers spray Roundup on wheat 7-14 days before harvest to speed drying and uniform ripening. 40-70% of U.S. Midwest wheat gets this treatment. The glyphosate absorbs into the grain—especially the bran and germ in whole wheat breads—and doesn't bake out.

Why the 20x difference? Sourcing and processing. High-residue breads (Sara Lee Honey Wheat: 191 ppb, Nature's Own Butter: 120 ppb) use grain from desiccation-heavy farms. Low-residue breads (Dave's Killer: ~10 ppb) source from cleaner suppliers or use organic wheat where glyphosate is banned. White breads lose outer layers during milling but can still be contaminated if the inner grain absorbed glyphosate.

HOW TO CHOOSE LOW-GLYPHOSATE BREAD:

✅ Buy organic – USDA Organic bans glyphosate entirely. Brands like Dave's Killer (organic lines), Ezekiel, and Silver Hills Sprouted consistently test non-detect or under 12 ppb.

✅ Look for certifications – "Glyphosate Residue Free" or "Non-GMO Project Verified" signal tested supply chains.

✅ Check ingredients – "Organic whole wheat flour" as first ingredient + short lists = safer bet.

✅ Avoid conventional whole wheat – These keep the bran/germ where glyphosate concentrates most. Even "100% whole wheat" non-organic can hit 100-1000+ ppb.

✅ Try sprouted or sourdough – Brands using these methods often source cleaner grain.

Bottom line: The 20x gap exists because conventional farming prioritizes speed over safety. Organic isn't a trend—it's the only legal barrier between you and daily Roundup in your toast. Check labels. Choose organic. Protect yourself and your family.
