Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for children with autism. We are addressing this head on with our life saving water safety lessons through the Ernie Els Autism Aquatics program.

We are so grateful to The Bar Bulletin for sharing the story our Executive Director, Marlene Sotelo, co-wrote to spotlight the life-saving impact of inclusive swim instruction and the urgent need for accessible programs. It’s the same vision driving the creation of our Specialized Autism Friendly Recreation Complex, where safety, skill-building, and life-changing opportunities come together.

Get Your “Golf Capital of the World” License Plate

For the past nine years, the Florida Junior Golf Council has provided grant funding to support our Ernie Els Autism Golf Program.

Our golf program teaches the fundamentals of golf including putting, pitching, chipping, and full swing, as well as proper club grip. Did you know the North Jupiter Flatwoods Natural Area is the first certified autism-friendly natural area in Florida? This 160-acre preserve was thoughtfully designed with sensory signage, rest areas, and accessible paved paths to ensure individuals with autism feel safe, comfortable, and welcome.

That’s why it’s so meaningful that the Roots & Ruts Off-Road 5K Run/Walk takes participants through this incredible trail. During World Autism Month, we’re running (and walking!) with purpose, raising funds to support individuals and families affected by autism while celebrating our community’s commitment to inclusion.

Join us for a morning you won’t want to miss on Saturday, April 18, featuring a scenic 5K, a post-race expo with autism-inclusive vendors, a free sensory-friendly obstacle course for all ages and abilities, and more!

Els for Autism State of the Science Featured Article: Managing Anxiety: Tools and Strategies for Emotional Balance

Up to 40 percent of individuals with autism also experience clinically significant anxiety, often due to sensory sensitivities and difficulty with unpredictability.

While avoiding activities may seem easier in the moment, it limits opportunities to build tolerance. Instead, introducing coping strategies and tools can help reduce anxiety and strengthen long-term skills.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), through psychoeducation, exposure, and cognitive restructuring, is a highly effective tool. Additionally, relaxation techniques (e.g., diaphragmatic breathing, sensory-based tools) and a tailored, multifaceted approach - addressing sensory, emotional, and cognitive needs - are also important tools of a comprehensive strategy to support emotional balance.

Club 31 Champion of the Month: Kyla

Meet January's Club 31 Champion of the Month, Kyla. She brings an overwhelming sense of kindness and joy each day, always approaching her golf classes with a positive attitude and enthusiasm. Highly social, she remembers everyone's name and has even befriended several volunteers, showcasing significant growth in her social skills.

While she is very independent during golf activities, she actively seeks social interactions and seems to especially enjoy group and teamwork-related activities. Her confidence and independence continue to grow with each session.

Help us continue providing programs and services to clients like Kyla by becoming a monthly donor with Club 31. Your monthly donation of $31 provides consistent and reliable support, ensuring long-term sustainability for the organization and the clients we serve.
