Not all calories are created equal. A new study reinforces the importance avoiding simple carbohydrates to tackle obesity and associated metabolic diseases. While social programs and more coverage for obesity medication are needed, it's up to us to make the necessary changes for a healthier future.

Objective To comprehensively examine the associations between changes in carbohydrate intake and weight change at four year intervals. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting Nurses’ Health Study (1986-2010), Nurses’ Health Study II (1991-2015), and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-20...

I have been pushing all my patients to exercise to improve healthspan based on multiple studies that show moderate exercise provides significant morbidity and mortality benefit. I also encourage a combination of aerobic, resistance, and flexibility. Here is study that supports the assumption that preserving muscle mass and strength is an integral part of improving outcomes. Lets get pumping people!

This cohort study examines the prospective associations of different combinations of moderate aerobic physical activity, vigorous aerobic physical activity, and muscle-strengthening activity with all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality.

The newer variants are not only a concern for increased transmission but they are also a concern as some of the diagnostic testing we are currently using do not identify these virus variants. A negative test PCR test can still be false especially now with variants!
FDA has identified some tests that may be impacted listed below:

Molecular Tests Impacted by SARS-CoV-2 Mutations
The FDA’s analysis to date has identified the following EUA-authorized molecular tests whose performance could be impacted by SARS-CoV-2 viral mutations:

Accula SARS-CoV-2 Test (Mesa Biotech Inc.)
Linea COVID-19 Assay Kit (Applied DNA Sciences, Inc.)
TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc.)
Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2, Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2 DoD, Xpert Omni SARS-CoV-2 (Cepheid)

The more targets the PCR test is using the less likely the variant will be missed. The bigger problem is finding out what test was used by your testing site. WE need more transparency so we can make good decisions!

The best protection is to get vaccinated and continue to follow CDC recommendations.

MinuteClinic CVS Health Kudos for bringing testing to multiple sites but have to up the game regarding education and ease of information regarding
Per CDC:

“People undergoing testing should receive clear information on

the manufacturer and name of the test, the type of test, the purpose of the test, the performance specifications of the test, any limitations associated with the test, who will pay for the test, how the test will be performed, how and when they will receive test results, and;
how to understand what the results mean, actions associated with negative or positive results, the difference between testing for workplace screening versus for medical diagnosis, who will receive the results, how the results may be used, and any consequences for declining to be tested.”

Yet no information on what pcr test is used or effectiveness against variants. The customer service number provided is “not in service “ 👎

With the rise in cases across the northern US we have to face reality. Something simple as just mandating universal mask could save tens of thousands of lives. We’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past but that’s not a reason to continue making them.

Information regarding SARS COV2 is difficult to obtain in the setting of politicizing of information. Don’t “do your own research” relay on science and look towards the medical professionals to help guide your choices. The virus does have the rare ability to spread via aerosols as demonstrated during the Washington state super spreader event and other data including being able to identify the virus in the hallways of hospitals. I am disappointed in our public health professionals that are allowing politics into their realm to keep the public safe.

Jay Butler, the CDC’s deputy director for infectious disease, said the Friday update saying it was “possible” that the virus spreads via airborne transmission was posted in error.
