Attention parents, caregivers, and drivers! Montana’s child passenger safety laws just underwent an important upgrade. As of October 1, new requirements under HB 586 are in effect to better protect our children in vehicles.

Key Changes You Need to Know:
• Children under age 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat with an internal harness.
• Children ages 2 to 4 can use rear- or forward-facing car seats.
• Kids ages 4 to 8 must be secured in a forward-facing seat or booster with a lap-shoulder belt.
• Only children age 9 or older, or those who exceed car seat height/weight limits, may use the adult seat belt alone.

A booster seat raises the child, so the vehicle's seat belt fits perfectly across the strongest points on their body. Many children need their booster seats until they are around 10-12 years old. Test your child's seat belt fit with this simple Seat Belt Fit Test.

• Sit all the way back on their seat
• Bend their knees at the edge of the seat
• Keep their feet on the floor
