“In a moment of contact, for each person in a couple, being aware of how they are different from their partner, and how their partner is different from them, can start to open up a space for more connection. The space ‘in between’ two people is where contact happens.”

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.
And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.” ~Albert Camus ❄️☀️

“Parenting during the age of the coronavirus is a completely new level of burnout and it is not only causing monumental levels of stress, it is also causing many of us to completely shut down. Because I don't know about you, but I don't want to make one more decision.” .ly How are all of you coping with parent burnout during this pandemic? One tip: grounding exercises with your child to bring you both into the present moment together. Here are some suggestions 1. Put on a swim suit & splash around in a bubble bath with your child 2. Eye contact staring contests 3. Pillow fights 4. Peekaboo...and if you don’t have caves try trees, get outside! 5. Staring at the clouds holding hands laying on your back, ask your child what do you see? 6. Music! Play an instrument with your child or turn on some music and dance around 7. Meditation: hold hands, close your eyes and take deep breaths together. See if you can break your record each time meditating a little longer as you continue practicing. ***We are all in this together 💛

The methodology of Gestalt Therapy is awareness, and we would add “awareness with engagement (contact)”. Liv Estrup and I (Rita) explain this in more detail in our article about supervision in the Gestalt Review, 2000.

We write: “Good therapy facilitates” learning how to become aware of what we are doing and how we are doing it - when we are doing it. With this awareness comes choice, not change.

The goal of therapy is the restoration of choicefullness enabling self-regulation with the situation. By tracking clients’ processes and increasing their awareness of how to track their own processes, clients develop second-order awareness wherein they become aware of how to become aware.

To use a kitchen metaphor, the therapist facilitates the client’s learning how to cook rather than feeding him/her/them a meal. To read the full article, visit our website on the speaking page.
